Yellowjackets Defeat Saints, Take Border Battle

Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, St. Scholastica 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Tuesday night to take on border-rival St. Scholastica. The Yellowjackets played host in the only regular season matchup between the two teams in the 2015-16 season.

This matchup between the rivals ended in the Yellowjackets favor, as they defeated St. Scholastica by a final of 2-1.

The Yellowjackets opened up the scoring at the 15:25 mark of the first. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) finished off a 3-on-1 rush when she picked up a rebound off of an Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) shot and buried it for her seventh goal of the season. Coey and Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) assisted on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 8:17 mark of the second when Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) took a beautiful set up pass from Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and beat the St. Scholastica goalie for her sixth of the year. Adair and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) each had assists on the even strength tally.

The Saints cut the Yellowjacket lead in half at the 14:12 mark of the second. On the power play following an Abby Constant-Bercier (The Pas, Manitoba) penalty, Denisa Lalikova scored her first goal of the season, beating Yellowjacket goalie Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner). Taylor Guzzo and Sierra Hanowski assisted on the tally.

There was no scoring in the third, but things got interesting in the final minutes. Already playing with an extra skater after pulling their goalie, the Saints were able to gain a 6-on-4 advantage following a Coey 5-minute major for boarding with just over a minute remaining. The Yellowjacket defense held, limiting the Saints to one shot before time ran out.

Singer made her seventh consecutive start in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing one goal while making 22 saves. She is now 3-2-2 on the season.

Lindsey Hartfiel started in goal for the Saints, allowing two goals while making 28 saves. Hartfiel falls to 2-4-0 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for 13 minutes, while the Saints took two penalties for four minutes.

The Yellowjackets finished 0-2 on the power play. St. Scholastica finished 1-5.

The Yellowjackets (6-5-3, 1-3-2 WIAC) next game will be Saturday, December 12, when they host Concordia-Moorhead. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 2:00 p.m.
