Stevens Point Shuts Out Yellowjackets

Box Score

Stevens Point 5, Yellowjackets 0

After Friday's loss at UW-Stevens Point, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team found itself in a position where it had to win to keep the 2014-15 season continue. They needed a victory in Saturday's game, plus a win in the mini-game in order to take the series from Stevens Point and advance to the WIAC finals. Conversely, Stevens Point knew that, a win or a tie would push them into the WIAC Championship next weekend.

And the Pointers took the drama out of the game early, scoring three times in the first period on their way to a 5-0 win over the Yellowjackets and a sweep of their WIAC semifinal series.

The loss, closes out the 2014-15 season for the Yellowjackets. The close out the campaign with a 15-12-0 record.

Stevens Point, just as they did Friday, opened the scoring early Satureday. Ali Biagini opened the scoring, putting one past Yellowjacket goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) just 2:35 into the game to stake the Pointers to the early lead. Just over four minutes later Stevens Point stretched the lead. At 6:51 Betsy Anderson scored an unassisted goal on the power play to make it 2-0. The lead bulged to 3-0 at 12:26 of the period on a goal by Rachel Reynard.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Pointers 11-8 in the opening frame, but went to the locker room down three.

The Pointers made it a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, Emily Lester scored her first goal of the game and third goal of the weekend at 10:12, converting on a power play. The goal also spelled the end of the night for Leikkari, who surrendered four goals on only 11 shots in the game. She was replaced in goal by Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute).

Unfortunately for Brown, the Pointers were equally as unhospitable to her. Just 80 seconds after she entered the game the Pointers made it a 5-0 game on a goal by Shauna Bollinger.

The Yellowjackets were able to shut the Pointers down the rest of the way, but they weren't able to generate the offense needed to get back in the game.

Janna Beilke-Skoug got the win in goal for the Pointers. She finished with 29 saves. Leikkari and Brown combined to stop 14 Stevens Point shots.

The game was a penalty-filled affair, with the Yellowjackets taking 12 penalties for 32 minutes. Stevens Point took six penalties for 12 minutes. The Pointers were 2-for-11 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets were scoreless in four chances.

With the loss the season comes to a close for the Yellowjackets. The loss also brings the careers of four Yellowjacket seniors - Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area), Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North), Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine), and Caitlyn Hunt (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln), to a conclusion.
