Stevens Point Soars Past Yellowjackets

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point 6, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Friday when they took on UW-Stevens Point with playoff standings on the line. With a weekend sweep over the Pointers, the Yellowjackets would have moved up to second place in the conference and hosted the first round of the WIAC playoffs.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, it looks like they will be traveling for the playoffs, as the Pointers scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Yellowjackets 6-1.

Stevens Point drew first blood in this matchup. Lauren Smith netted her fourth of the season at the 14:41 mark to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead. Hailey Rock assisted on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets tied it up less than three minutes later. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) found some space and was able to drive home her fourth goal of the season. Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) had the assist on the even strength tally, as the Yellowjackets and Pointers went into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Everything started going downhill for the Yellowjackets in the second period. A turnover in the defensive zone gave the Pointers Shauna Bollinger a wide open net to shoot at, and she took advantage, putting UW-Stevens Point up 2-1. 0:46 later Stevens Point took a 3-1 lead when Rachel Reynard found the back of the net.

The Pointers would go on to score two more times in the second period, as what looked like a close game quickly turned into a blowout. Stevens Point would score once more at the 3:09 mark of the third to cap the scoring, and diminishing any hope the Yellowjackets had for home playoffs.

Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner) started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing five goals while making 26 saves in 40:00 before being pulled to begin the third. Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) came in to relive Singer, allowing one goal while making nine saves. Signer took the loss and moves to 3-5-2 on the season.

Sydney Conley started in net for the Pointers, allowing one goal while making 24 saves. Conley is now 8-4-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took four penalties for eight minutes. The Pointers took one penalty for two minutes. The Yellowjackets finished 0-1 on the power play. Stevens Point finished 2-4.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-9-4, 3-6-2) is a rematch against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, February 13. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 2:00 p.m.
