Pointers Shoot Past Yellowjackets

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point 7, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Friday night when they took on UW-Stevens Point in the first round of the WIAC women's hockey playoffs. The Yellowjackets split the season series with the Pointers this year, winning 2-1 and tying 2-2 at Stevens Point on November 20 and 21.

Unfortunately the Yellowjackets couldn't repeat that early season magic, as they fell to the Pointers 7-1.

Things started out poorly for the Yellowjackets in this one. Following an Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) roughing penalty at 6:49 in the first, the Pointers found themselves on the power play. Less than 20 second later, at 7:06, Stevens Point's Cara Lemirande fired a shot that beat goaltender Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead.
Stevens Point made it 2-0 at 10:48. With the Yellowjackets on the penalty kill once more due to a Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) hooking penalty at 10:33, the Pointers Emily Lester found pay dirt, as the Yellowjackets found themselves scrambling to recollect themselves in the face of a two goal deficit.

The Yellowjackets cut into the Pointers lead later in the period. With the Yellowjackets on the power play, Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) fired a shot that found the back of the net to make it 2-1 Pointers at 17:49 in the first. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) assisted on the goal.

That goal was the lone highlight of the night for the Yellowjackets, as the proceeded to give up five unanswered goals, including two on the power play, over the next two periods to fall on the road to UW-Stevens Point.

Brown got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing five goals while making 20 saves. Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) relieved her at 11:16 in the third and proceeded to allow two goals while making six saves. Brown took the loss for the Yellowjackets, as she is now 6-5-1 on the season.

Sydney Conley got the start in net for the Pointers, allowing one goal while making 23 saves.

The Yellowjackets took eight penalties for 16 minutes. The Pointers took five penalties for 10 minutes.

The Yellowjackets were 1-4 on the power play. Stevens Point was 4-7 on the power play.

The Yellowjackets (10-11-5, 3-6-3 WIAC) and Pointers will play each other tomorrow to determine who advances to the WIAC Championship game. Game time from Stevens Point is set for 7:00 p.m. Should the Yellowjackets win, the two teams will play a 20 minutes mini game to determine who advances.
