Pointers Push Yellowjackets From Playoffs

Lynne Larson scored the only goal of the game for the Yellowjackets Saturday.
Box Score

Stevens Point 2, Yellowjackets 1 (OT)

Last week the Yellowjacket men's hockey team needed a Saturday win and a victory in the mini-game to move on in the WIAC playoffs. They got the win, but came up short in the mini-game and saw their season come to a close.

After Friday's lopsided loss at UW-Stevens Point, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team would need the same kind of performance, and a better result in extended play to keep their season alive another week.

Unfortunately, the Pointers had other ideas.

As the teams headed for overtime, the Yellowjackets knew that, despite a tie game they may have to pull their goaltender for an extra attacker, as they were in a win-or-bust situation. With less than a minute to go goaltender Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner) headed to the bench, and the Pointers took advantage, scoring the game-winning goal into an empty net to defeat the Yellowjackets 2-1, bringing an end to the 2015-16 campaign.

The Yellowjackets came out like a team on a mission, outshooting the Pointers 12-6 in the opening period. The shot advantage was fueled by a pair of power plays, but the Pointers played stout defense and the teams were scoreless after one period.

The stalemate was broken and the Yellowjackets drew first blood just 17 seconds into the second period when Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba), who scored the only goal of the game for the Yellowjackets Friday, potted her second of the playoffs on an assist from Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) to make it 1-0.

Unfortunately the Yellowjackets weren't able to hold the lead long. Less than a minute to be exact. With 56 seconds elapsed in the middle frame Stevens Point tied it on a goal from Lexi Englund.

The Pointers flipped the script in the second, outshooting the Yellowjackets 17-9. The Yellowjacket defense didn't break any further, and the teams stayed 1-1 after 40 minutes. The Pointers more than doubled up the Yellowjackets in shots on goal in the third, but again neither team dented the twine and the 1-1 score held as the teams went to overtime.

It was the Yellowjackets getting the first scoring chance of the extra session, but Pointer goaltender Sydney Conley made the save. The next shot of the period went the way of the Pointers, and with the Yellowjackets in desperation mode they didn't have to beat a goaltender with it. Emily Lester did the damage, scoring on the empty net to make the final score 2-1.

With the win the Pointers advance to next week's WIAC final against UW-River Falls.

Singer made the start for the Yellowjackets and made 31 saves. Her record dropped to 3-6-2 on the year. At the other end Conley made 25 saves for the Pointers.

For the second night in a row there was no shortage of penalties called. The Yellowjackets took seven for 14 minutes, while the Pointers took six for 12 minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets were 1-for-5 while the Pointers were scoreless in seven chances.

The loss brings the season to a close for the Yellowjackets, who finish the campaign with a record of 10-12-15.
