Last Week's Highlights
- The University of Wisconsin Superior continues to collect athlete of the week honors in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, with rookie slugger
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) earning
the title of UMAC Player of the Week while leading the Yellowjackets to a 3-1 record last week.
- UW-Superior continues to dominate
the UMAC men's field athlete weekly awards with sophomore
Fauston Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko H.S.) taking home the honor this week.
- Sophomore
Taylor Phillips (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) grabbed her
second UMAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week award of 2016-17 and first of the outdoor season on Monday as well.
Baseball (7-19, 3-5 UMAC)
- The Yellowjackets have stumbled in their last four after a successful homestand last week that helped the team boast a UMAC Player of the Week. The younger Albertson brother is 21-of-63 on the season (.333) with seven extra-base hits including a team-leading four home runs. He's slugging .587 with a .405 on-base percentage. UW-Superior will return home Saturday to host Crown College in the team's annual "pink game" promoting breast cancer research. The Storm is 12-8 on the season and a surprising 3-1 in league play headed into a doubleheader with the University of Minnesota Morris on Thursday. Sunday, the Yellowjackets meet up with Macalester College for the second time this season. The Scots beat UWS 7-5 and 19-8 in a doubleheader back on March 29. Next Tuesday, the Yellowjackets host the University of Northwestern to close a stretch of eight games in a week.
Men's and Women's Golf
- UW-Superior competed at the MidCountry Bank Classic hosted by Crown in Maple Plain, Minnesota last Monday. Senior
Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) posted the best score in the two-year history of the reborn golf program as he won the tournament with a 69 (-3) as the Yellowjackets finished fourth as a team. At the same event, rookie
Ally Busick (Osceola, Wis./Osceola H.S.) led the field and the UWS women finishing first overall with an 82 (+10). The Yellowjackets were third as a team. Thursday, the men and women will be in action at a Martin Luther College-hosted invitational in Mankato. Saturday, the Yellowjacket women are in action at the Falcon Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Softball (13-12, 6-4 UMAC)
- Adverse weather in the northland continues to affect the Yellowjackets' schedule as a doubleheader originally scheduled for Wednesday in Superior will now take place in St. Paul with UW-Superior traveling to Northwestern on Friday afternoon. The Yellowjackets have not been in action since last Thursday afternoon's split with Crown. Northwestern is 10-16 overall and 6-2 in league play and should be stiff competition for UWS. Saturday, the Yellowjackets travel to Bethany Lutheran to take on the 10-20 Vikings in Mankato in their penultimate stop of the regular season.
Men's and Women's Track & Field
- After another award-winning performance last weekend, the Yellowjackets are back in action Friday at the Phil Esten Challenge hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
