MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (February 11, 2018) – The Yellowjackets had an unexpectedly interesting afternoon as they traveled to Hamline University Sunday. Due to restricted court time, Superior was unable to finish a combined six matches, two on the women's side and four on the men's.
Women's Doubles
Superior fought hard in their doubles as every set found at least one 'Jacket point. The No. 2 duo of Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) was able to push their matchup to a 9-7 set, but came up short in the end. The No. 1 group of Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and Mariah Linder (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) were also menacing to Pipers, winning five games, but were edged in the end.
Women's Singles
Wald was the only 'Jacket to get a point on the board, winning her matchup with an extra 7-5 first set, and then came out and proved herself in a 6-2 victory.
Charlotte Zangs (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) was unable to finish her sets, and Honkola didn't even find court time due to the restrictions.
Men's Doubles
The 'Jacket men put themselves in good position in their doubles matchup, getting five wins in each of their sets, but were unable to find victory. Leonardo Paredes (Campinas, Brazil/Sao Paschoall) and Chad Hietala (Aurora, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) took their Piper team to an 8-6 set, and fought well in the loss.
Men's Singles
Only two Yellowjackets finished their singles sets, Josiah Borst (Becker, Minn./Becker) and Paredes. They both challenged their Piper to a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
Looking ahead Superior will have almost two weeks off to tune up before they take on Grand View University Feb. 24.
