Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) have been named to the CoSIDA 2021-22 Academic All-District
® Women's Soccer First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. CoSIDA Academic All-America program separately recognizes women's and men's soccer student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Schussman, an Accounting major with a 3.77 grade-point average, has 15 goals scored this season to rank 28th in the NCAA in the category. She is also fifth nationally in assists (12) and 14th in points (42). Schussman is also is 19th in the country in assists per game at 0.55.
Schussman is a four-time All-UMAC performer, having been named a first-team honoree 2019-21 and to the second team as a freshman in 2018.
Schussman became the program leader in career goals in the UMAC semifinal win against the Cougars with a 57th-minute tally to make it a 3-0 match. The 'Jackets went on for a 6-0 victory and a date with UNW in the championship. Schussman enters the NCAA tournament with 34 career goals.
Schussman was UMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 1 after scoring the game winner and regular-season-title-clinching goal in a 4-1 victory at Minnesota Morris on Oct. 29.
Wilson, a Business Administration major with a 4.0 GPA, earned UMAC Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team selection in 2021. She is eighth in the NCAA in goals (20), sixth in points (51) and ninth in assists (11). She also ranks third in the country with eight game-winning goals. Finally, Wilson is 26th nationally in assists per game at 0.52. Wilson scored a career-high four goals in a 6-1 victory over Minnesota Morris on Oct. 2. She also earned consecutive UMAC Offensive Player of the Week awards on Sept. 7 and 13.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher and be a starter or key contributor to their respective team.
Both Schussman and Wilson will now advance to the Academic All-America ballot. Those honors will be announced at a later date.
Riding a school-record 17-match unbeaten streak, the Yellowjackets (18-3-1) won their first-ever conference championship and face No. 25 St. Catherine in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday at 11 a.m.
