ST. PAUL, Minn. – UW-Superior sophomore Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year and to the All-UMAC First Team for women's tennis, the league announced Monday.

Callaway is the first UMAC Player of the Year selection in the four-year history of the sport at Superior. Junior Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) joined Callaway on the all-conference first team for the second selection to that post of her career. Wald also earned a spot on the UMAC Sportsmanship Team.

The pair helped the Yellowjackets to the UMAC semifinals for the third consecutive season. Callaway went 9-4, including 5-0 in the UMAC, on the year, playing exclusively in the No. 1 singles position. She teamed with both Wald and freshman Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) at No. 1 doubles, as well, playing to a 9-5 mark. Callaway was 5-1 in conference and 6-3 with Wald. Callaway was 3-2 overall playing with Owa.

She was named UMAC Player of the Week April 26.

Callaway ends the season with Superior's all-time best career winning percentage in singles (.594), going 19-13 in three seasons. The 19 wins are second in program history while her 16 doubles victories are fifth. Callaway's singles winning percentage this season of .692 is the second-best single-season number in school history.

Wald was 8-6 in singles with a 7-6 record at No. 2. She went 4-2 overall in the UMAC. In doubles, Wald was 9-5, playing with both Callaway and sophomore Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) at Nos. 1 and 2. Wald was 3-2 overall with Roberts in the second position, to go with the 6-3 mark with Callaway.

Wald closes her career with the most singles wins (27) in program history and second-best winning percentage in singles play at .519. She also is the career leader in singes victory with 28, eight clear of second place.

The Yellowjackets finished the season 6-9 overall as a team on the year.
