UMAC Honors Guetten Chaves Again

4/24/2023 3:00:00 PM

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – In what has become a regular occurrence in 2023, UW-Superior freshman Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) has been named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, it was announced Monday.

For Guetten Chaves, it's the second consecutive week and fifth time in 2023 he has received the weekly honor from the UMAC. He previously was named the men's tennis athlete of the week Feb. 13, Feb. 20, Feb. 27, and Apr. 17.

Guetten Chaves played a pivotal role in five matches last week, helping the Yellowjackets secure the UMAC North Division Crown and enter the conference tournament as a top seed for the second year in a row.

After suffering his only loss of the week against Bethany Lutheran at No. 1 singles Monday, Guetten Chaves avenged that loss Saturday with a three-set win over the Vikings Saturday. Sunday he won the clinching match against Northwestern, defeating their No. 1 singles entry in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles play, Guetten Chaves and Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) teamed up to go 4-0 at No. 1 doubles, defeating Bethany Lutheran's top tandem twice and winning once each against Martin Luther and Northwestern.

For the year, Guetten Chaves 14-4 in singles matches, and 15-7 in doubles play, with all matches coming at the No. 1 seed.

The Yellowjackets (22-3, 10-0 UMAC) now advance to the UMAC Tournament, where they will take on Principia in the conference semifinals. The match will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Apr. 28 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
