MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After suffering their first loss in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play versus Northwestern Friday, the Yellowjacket volleyball team got back on track Saturday, defeating North Central in straight sets to wrap up the 'Jackets' Twin Cities trip.
Freshman
Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) issued a balanced attack versus the Rams, collecting 21-of-50 total Yellowjacket kills while digging 14 on the day, leading UWS to a quick 3-0 victory.
With Saturday's victory, the Yellowjackets now stand at 14-6 overall and a 4-1 mark in UMAC play.
Match Notes
- The Yellowjackets struck early and often, beginning with five-straight points from Hohbein, Ayla Oltmanns (Gilbert, Minn./Duluth East) and Maiana Stark (Germantown, Wis./Germantown). After taking a 10-4 lead, UWS extended the lead further before the Rams began to answer back, coming within five points at 19-14.
- Back-to-back kills from Hohbein, along with a pair of Rams miscues helped push UWS to a 25-16 set victory.
- Hohbein led off the second round with back-to-back kills, sparking another early Yellowjacket attack to lead 6-3. Oltmanns grabbed four more kills before Addy Gangl (Nashwauk, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) joined the party, who was followed by Marena Saeger (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Gabi Schwirtz (Plato, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake).
- The Rams used Yellowjacket miscues to spark a short rally, coming within four at 22-18, but Hohbein, Gangl and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity) tabbed a kill each to end the second set 25-20.
- NCU took its first lead of the contest at the beginning of the third, scoring the first two points. UWS mustered a combination of points and kills to get within two at 8-6, but the Rams kept running away with the match.
- Midway through the set, the Yellowjackets embarked on an eight-point rally with kills from Hohbein, Schwirtz, and Gangl, retaking the lead at 20-15. Despite an attempt from the Rams to come back, the Yellowjackets received the final two points from Smith and Stark, earning the three-set sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third.
- Hohbein and Oltmanns were the only Yellowjackets with kills reaching the double figures.
- The 'Jackets swung at a .264 clip Saturday afternoon, the third highest mark of the season to date.
UW-Superior returns home for a three-match homestand beginning Friday, Oct. 11, taking on Bethany Lutheran. The opening serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Mertz.
