DULUTH, Minn.— The Yellowjacket men's and track and field team headed across the bridge Saturday, competing in the Lake Superior Challenge hosted by the College of St. Scholastica.

The Yellowjackets had strong showing Saturday, coming home with five first-place finishes.

Newcomer
Cale Newby (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) brought home one of the gold medal finishes, winning the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:42. It marked the first collegiate win for Newby, and also established a new personal record. Newby currently sits fourth in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) in the event.

Continuing with the track events,
Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) claimed first place in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 23.35 seconds. Schorr also had a strong showing in he 60-meter dash, placing second with a time of 7.24 seconds, a season best.

Michael Butterfield (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) earned a win in the 3,000 meters, finishing with a time of 9:13.31.

In the field events, pole vaulter
Jason Thomas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) would establish a new personal record by over half a foot, coming in with a mark of 4.00 meters. Thomas sits second in the UMAC, trailing only teammate
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage).
Isaac Hanson (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) was right behind Thomas Saturday, placing second with a mark of 3.70 meters. Hanson's mark was also a personal record.

Rounding out the victories for the Yellowjackets Saturday was
Jordan Goldfine (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), who claimed the long jump with a leap of 6.26 meters.

Meet Notes
- St. Scholastica and Crown also competed Saturday in addition to the Yellowjackets.
- The Yellowjackets swept the top three places in the long jump Saturday. Schorr placed second behind Goldfine with a season-best mark of 6.21 meters. Ethan DeFoe (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) placed third with a mark of 5.99 meters.
- The Yellowjackets also swept the top spots in the 5,000 meters. After Newby's win, Tyler Smith (Ironwood, Mich./Ironwood) was second with a time of 18:21.05 and Dominick Meisner (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) was third with a time of 18:59.76.
- Reigning UMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week David Collins (Ironwood, Mich./Luther L. Wright) placed third in the mile with a time of 4:36.18, a personal record.
- The 4-x-400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 3:40.18. The team was made up of Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Goldfine, Joel Thomas (Cardiff, Wales/Islwyn) and Bryce Boldt (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca).
- Matheson placed second in the 400 meters.
- Other top three finishes included Garrett Kroells (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) (60-meter dash), Boldt (200 meters), Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona) (400 meters), Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum) (3,000 meters) and Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) (shot put).
- The Yellowjacket men set 22 personal records and nine season bests Saturday.
The Yellowjackets return home to host the Third Annual Maday Classic Saturday, Feb. 10. The events will begin at noon in Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
