VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Yellowjacket men's track and field team, or more specifically a portion of the men's team made its outdoor season debut Friday, competing in the Betty S. Rogers Spring Break Invitational at Virginia Wesleyan University.
Â
And what a day it was for the Yellowjackets, who won multiple events and shattered a school record along the way.
Â
The 4-x-200-meter relay team placed second Friday, but it was the top finishing team among NCAA Division III competitors. The Yellowjackets came across the line with a time of 1:30.42, which set a new school record by more than two seconds. The team, made up of
Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior),
Edward Hakanson (Foxboro, Wis./Superior Senior),
Bryce Boldt (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) and
Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona) toppled the previous record, set in 2010.
Â
Schorr also notched a top-ten finish in the 100-meter dash preliminary, placing eighth with a time of 11.25 seconds. Schorr was one of four Yellowjackets to compete in the race, but the only one to qualify for Saturday's final.
Â
The Yellowjackets picked up three victories in the field events.
Â
Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) earned the win in the hammer throw, coming in with a mark of 47.73 meters. The mark was short of Ohman's personal record, but it was more than five meters clear of the rest of the field.
Carson Wilhorn (Necedah, Wis./Necedah) also earned a top-five finish, placing third with a heave of 34.24 meters.
Â
The Yellowjackets had the top two finishers in the pole vault.
Isaac Hanson (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) placed second, clearing the bar at a height of 3.33 meters. The only competitor better was teammate
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage), who won the event by clearing a height of 3.93 meters.
Â
One of the best performances of the day came courtesy of
Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum). The senior won the javelin with a heave of 54.60 meters. The mark destroyed his previous personal record of 49.15 meters, and currently has him ranked in the top ten in the nation.
Â
The Yellowjackets placed two competitors in the top ten in the long jump.
Ben Babcock (Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area) placed second with a leap of 6.56 meters, a mark that put him just a tenth-of-a-meter behind the winner. Schorr finished seventh with a jump of 6.16 meters.
Â
The Yellowjackets will return to the Betty S. Rogers Track and Field Center Saturday, for day two of Virginia Wesleyan's Spring Break Invitational. Events will begin at 11 a.m.
