SAINT PAUL, Minn. – It had been three weeks since the Yellowjacket men's track and field team was competing.
Following the team's trip to compete in Virginia Beach, Va., the Yellowjackets returned home to begin their outdoor season in earnest. The plan was derailed, however, as last week's winter storm forced the cancellation of their meet at Saint John's.
The wait was finally over Saturday, as the Yellowjackets headed to the Twin Cities to compete in the Hamline Invitational. And even though the team had been off for three weeks, it didn't show a lot of rust at an event featuring a strong field.
Â
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets was sprinter
Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior). The senior had a strong afternoon, earning a pair of top-ten finishes. Schorr placed third in the 200-meter dash, finishing the sprint in 23.28 seconds. He also had a good run in the 100-meter dash, placing sixth with a time of 11.10 seconds.
Â
Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) also finished in the top ten in the 200, placing ninth with a time of 23.58 seconds.
Â
The Yellowjackets had good grouping in the 5,000 meters.
Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) broke the top ten, placing 10th with a time of 15:56.00. Doherty came across an eyelash ahead of
Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum), who was 11th with a time of 15:56.09. Rounding out the trio was
Michael Butterfield (Bovey, Minn./Greenway), who placed 15th with a time of 16:10.27. Doherty and Reese set new personal records with their times.
Â
Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) continued his strong senior season, winning the shot put with a heave of 17.25 meters, establishing a new personal record.
Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) also had a top-five finish, placing fifth in the javelin with a heave of 49.09 meters.
Â
In the pole vault
Jason Thomas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) finished dead even. The duo tied for fifth place, clearing the bar at a height of 4.05 meters.
Â
Staying with the field events,
Ben Babcock (Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area) placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.26 meters. As good as that was, Babcock was even better in the triple jump, placing fourth with a mark of 12.49 meters.
Â
