Morris, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team opened he Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) portion of its schedule earlier this week with a convincing victory over North Central, one that saw them score double-digit goals for the sixth time in program history. Senior
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior), the program's all-time leader scorer, paced the offense with her first hat trick of the 2024 season.
Saturday the Yellowjackets were back in conference play, competing on the road for just the second time this season, as they took on Minnesota Morris. And just like in Wednesday's opener, Wilson paced the Yellowjackets.
The Superior native scored twice in the first half, as the Yellowjackets built an early lead and held off a late Morris rally for a 4-2 win at Cougar Field.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in UMAC play.
Elysabeth Lough (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical Academy) got the start in goal and didn't face any shots on goal in the first half.
Baylee Nygard (Saint Peter, Minn./Saint Peter) took over at the break, and made one save on three shots faced.
Match Notes
- The Yellowjackets have now won 11 straight matches against Minnesota Morris going back to Oct. 19, 2019.
- Shots attempted favored the Yellowjackets 28-8. Shots on goal favored the Yellowjackets, 13-3.
- Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) opened the scoring for the second match in a row, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead on an unassisted marker just 1:31 into the match. Her first goal Wednesday against North Central came at the 6:38 mark.
- Wilson netted her first of the match at 19:15 of the opening half to make it 2-0. The goal was assisted by Holmquist.
- Just over five minutes later Wilson made it 3-0 with her second of the match.
- With just 1:44 to go before halftime, Julia Lindow (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) scored to give the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead.
- In her last two matches, Holmquist has scored three goals and added three assists for nine points.
- Minnesota Morris avoided the shutout when Johnette Nagbe scored in the 78th minute.
- Nagbe wasn't done, scoring again in the 80th minute.
- Lindow's goal just before halftime was the first of her collegiate career.
- Wilson now has 74 goals in her career.
- Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko), Wilson, Holmquist and Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) all had two shots on goal to lead the Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Tuesday when they travel to St. Paul to take on Northwestern. Th opening kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at Reynolds Field.
