SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team wrapped up action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional and the Midwest Invite Saturday, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.
Doubles play began with the duo of
Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and
Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) face off against a tough UW-Whitewater squad. Friday's action saw the two defeat St. Scholastica in a tiebreaker, but they were unable to secure back-to-back days with tiebreaker victories, falling 8-7(1) in semifinal action.
The other 'Jacket tandem in action Saturday was
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale), taking on their counterparts from the tournament-host Gusties. The home court advantage agreed with Gustavus Adolphus, coming out on top 8-1.
Singles action was led by
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton), picking up an 8-2 victory against Evelyn Smiley of St. Olaf. In her quarterfinal match she breezed past Hannah Helms of Saint Benedict by a score of 8-0 before falling to Alex Repplier of UW-Whitewater by an 8-2 decision.
Anouk Bluemm (Nuernberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) and
Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) wrapped up their weekends taking on Luther and UW-Eau Claire, respectively. Bluemm would fall 8-3 while Kukowski fell 8-4.
The Yellowjackets return to the court Saturday, Oct. 12, taking on a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) competitors in UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse. The opening serves are set for 1 and 4 p.m., respectively.
