St. Scholastica Withstands Yellowjackets 56-52

DULUTH, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team traveled across the bridge to take on St. Scholastica in the annual bridge battle Wednesday evening. The 'Jackets held the upper hand early on with the Saints keeping near, but UWS led by as many as 15 in the second half. CSS turned it on in the fourth, scoring 31 points to come all the way back and defend their home court, coming away with a 56-52 win.

Game Notes
  • The Saints scored the first three points of the game and shutout the 'Jackets until midway in the first, as Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) completed a layup before knocking down a three pointer.
  • Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) drew a foul and logged both free throws before Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) took a feed from Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) and garnered a layup of her own, leading to an 11-7 edge in the first.
  • Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis./) each collected points in the second, helping Superior maintain their lead and go into the break with a seven-point advantage at 21-14.
  • 10 straight points from the 'Jackets led to their 15 point lead after the intermission, but the Saints began to make their move, taking advantage of Yellowjacket miscues to trim Superior's lead down to eight at 33-25 heading into the final frame.
  • Despite UWS scoring a game-high 19 points in the fourth, the Saints poured it on offensively, scoring 31 to claim the come-from-behind victory inside Reif Gymnasium.
  • Schafer led with 11 points and six rebounds, while Ferstl collected nine rebounds and Carlson garnered seven.
  • The 'Jackets shot 39.6 percent from the field while collecting a perfect 11-11 mark from the charity stripe.

The Yellowjackets stay on the road for their next contest, taking on Hamline this Saturday. The opening tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside Hutton Arena.
