MENOMONIE, Wis. – After senior
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) opened action at the Warren Bowlus Invite Friday afternoon, the rest of the Yellowjacket men's track and field team got to join the action inside the Sports and Fitness Center.
The 'Jackets fared well on the campus of UW-Stout, competing against some tough competition predominantly from both the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Alongside Lynch, freshman
Jesse Ortiz (Medford, Minn./Medford) would lead the way for Superior.
Meet Notes
- After getting through for events of the heptathlon Friday, Lynch wrapped up on Saturday. He took 13th in the 1,000-meter race with a 3:25.17 before taking fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.75 seconds. His best finish of the day came in the pole vault, achieving a mark of 4.10 meters for a share of second place.
- Overall, Lynch finished in 11th place with 4,270 points. His finish marks the third best heptathlon in Yellowjacket program history.
- Ortiz emerged onto the Division III scene in his first collegiate meet earlier in the season, establishing a 6.92 second 60-meter dash time to sit in 27th overall in the nation. Saturday he held his own yet again in a field of tough competition, qualifying for the finals with a 7.03 second finish for fourth place. In the finals, he would place fifth with a 7.04.
- The 200-meter saw Ortiz nearly crack another program record as he garnered fourth place clocking a 22.79 race time, sitting just .13 seconds away. This stands as an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) best.
- Ethan Bowe (Chetek, Wis./Chetek-Weyerhaeuser) nearly cracked the top ten in the 60-meter dash, finishing 12th in 7.15 seconds. Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Frank Terwey closely followed with race times of 7.34 and 7.35, respectively.
- In the 400-meter dash Garrett Kroells (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) logged a 53.94 for 11th place, while Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum) took 11th in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:57.90. Reese's time now sits atop the UMAC standings.
- Jason Thomas (Superior, Wis./Superior), Jackson Fiamoncini (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and Rene Sems (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) each garnered a 3.86-meter mark in the pole vault, nearly cracking the top ten.
- Garnering sixth place in the long jump was Jordan Goldfine (Superior, Wis./Superior), as he finished with a mark of 6.17 meters.
- The throws pit featured Carson Wilhorn (Necedah, Wis./Necedah), finishing the shot put with the best mark for Superior at 12.01 meters. He garnered 17th in the weight throw with a heave of 14.90 meters.
- In total, the Yellowjackets posted 11 personal records and seven season-best performances on the day.
The Yellowjackets now shift their focus to the UWRF Winter Classic. Action is set to start Saturday at the Robert P. Knowles Fieldhouse.
