Women's Tennis Falls to UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team was back in action Sunday, playing against UW-Eau Claire in its final match before its upcoming spring trip to Alabama.

The Yellowjackets, who are off to an impressive start to the 2024-25 season, dropped just their second match of the season last time out against St. Olaf. They were hoping to avoid dropping two in a row for the first time this season Sunday, but UW-Eau Claire had other ideas.

Eau Claire swept the doubles matches and rolled over the Yellowjackets in singles play, on the way to a 6-1 win at the John and Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center.

The lone point of the day for the Yellowjackets (8-3, 0-0 UMAC) came courtesy of Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills). The sophomore, who twice this has been named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, got the win at No. 3 singles, defeating Eau Claire's Beatriz Felchak in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

With the win, Curtis improved to 8-2 in singles action this season.

Match Notes
  • Curtis partnered with Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) at No. 2 doubles, where they fell to Eau Claire's Morgan Dekan and Liv Herzog 4-6. They had the closest of all the doubles matches.
  • Anouk Bluemm (Nuernberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) and Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) fell at No. 1 doubles, while Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) were defeated at No. 3 doubles.
  • All six singles matches were decided in straight sets.
  • Jonas and Drew have played doubles together in all 11 matches this season. They have a record of 6-5.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a meeting with Earlham College Monday, Mar. 10. The first serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Gulf Shores Tennis Complex in Gulf Shores, Ala.
