SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's track and field team opened the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Championships Friday afternoon. With eight conference titles under their belt, the 'Jackets aimed to continue their championship dynasty on the hunt for number nine.
Day one of the season finale proved to be a good one.
The Yellowjackets hold sole possession of first place with 112 total points, garnering seven personal-records, six season-best marks and six first-place finishes.
Meet Notes
- Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior) logged a 6.95-second finish in the 60-meter preliminary race, tying the meet record set by Martin Luther in the 2022-23 season for first place. Not far behind Schorr was Jesse Ortiz (Medford, Minn./Medford), clocking a 7.06 second finish.
- Edward Hakanson (Foxboro, Wis./Superior) took fifth place in 7.26 seconds, establishing a new season-best time, while Frank Terwey took ninth place with a 7.37 second race time.
- The 60-meter hurdles saw a duo of Yellowjackets finish in the top ten, beginning with Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) who set an 8.59 second race time, edging Martin Luther by .001 seconds. Snagging third place with an 8.77 second mark was Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage).
- Shifting to the 400-meter race, the 'Jackets saw a season-best race time from Garrett Kroells (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East), taking seventh place with a 53.72 finish.
- Both Dylan Uitto (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) took second and third place, respectively, in the mile. Uitto garnered a 4:30.02 race time while Doherty finished the race with a 4:30.91.
- Fifth place in the mile belongs to Ben Plackner (Bovey, Minn./Greenway), who set a 4:37.71 second finish on the afternoon. Furthermore, Kevin Hufziger (Macedon, N.Y./Penfield) and Ben Addler (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) PR'd in the mile with times of 5:13.40 and 5:16.26.
- Another Yellowjacket with a season-best came in Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum), running the 5,000-meter race. His campaign-low came at 16:14.29, taking the top spot in the race. Not far behind him was Maverick Hoogland (Catawba, Wis./Phillips), taking third in 16:21.94 before Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) took sixth at 16:44.31.
- Personal records in the 3,000-meter came for fifth-ranked Jayde Canfield (Prescott, Wis./Prescott), setting a new best at 16:39.01 and tenth-place Dominick Meisner (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) at 17:16.13. Tyler Smith (Ironwood, Mich./Ironwood) followed in 11th place, establishing a new season-best at 17:42.77.
- The Yellowjacket 4x200-meter relay squad took second on the afternoon joining first place Martin Luther with setting new meet records. The team of Kroells, Schorr, Hakanson and Ortiz collectively finished in 1:31.52, while the Knights led at 1:30.95. This time for UWS also serves as a season-best on the 2024-25 campaign.
- First place saw Superior's Reese, Plackner, Uitto and Doherty in the distance medley, finishing with a 35-second cushion with second place Crown. The quartet finished in 11:09.12.
- Transitioning to the field events, Lynch set a season-best in the high jump, taking ourth place with a mark of 1.88 meters. Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) took sixth at 1.78 meters, while Chance Davis (Superior, Wis./Superior) set a personal record with a leap of 1.68 meters.
- Two Yellowjackets saw themselves atop the long jump result list, beginning with Schorr. He PR'd at 6.57 meters, while Ortiz sat in second with a 6.43-meter leap.
- Setting a season-best jump was Jordan Goldfine (Superior, Wis./Superior), sitting in fifth place at 6.26 meters. Tucker Briggs (Superior, Wis./Superior) also set a new high-water mark, taking 11th at 5.57 meters.
- The Yellowjacket throwers fared well Friday, as Carson Wilhorn (Necedah, Wis./Necedah) took first place in the weight throw with a heave of 15.85 meters. Bo Waletzko (Superior, Wis./Superior) sits in second at 14.20 meters, while Cameron Wegner (Superior, Wis./Superior) (13.35 meters) and Fabian Rosales (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) (13.20 meters) took seventh and eighth place, respectively.
The second and final day of the 2024-25 UMAC Indoor Track and Field Championship is set for Saturday, with events beginning at 11 a.m. inside the Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse.
