Yellowjacket Men Clinch Share of UMAC North Division Title

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The 2024-25 campaign for the Yellowjacket men's tennis team has been rugged to say the least. From seeing action at the ITA Midwest Regional to taking on the best competition on both a regional and national stage, Superior has held their own through the fall and winter seasons.

All these matches have prepared UWS for match play in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). Last weekend the 'Jackets faced off against a pair of conference opponents in Crown and Martin Luther, sweeping both matches by decisions of 7-0.

Friday Superior played host to the Eagles of Northwestern. After overnight rain in the Twin Ports delayed the match times, the 'Jackets were able to keep to their winning ways, sweeping UNW 7-0.

Not only did Friday's match result in the third-straight where UWS didn't give up a team point, it meant they earned a share of the UMAC's North Division regular season title.

Match Notes
  • UWS earned the first point of the day, sweeping the Eagles in doubles play. Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) and Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) downed their counterparts at the top spot 6-2 before Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
  • The final Yellowjacket tandem of Brandon Chu (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) and Blake Haugen (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) took down Northwestern 6-3 at the third doubles position.
  • Guetten Chaves took down Carson Haack 6-2, 6-2 at the top singles position.
  • Kanugovi logged 6-4, 6-1 victories over Griffen Jarchow at No. 2 singles.
  • Chhabra and Sakakibara each won in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 at Nos. 3 and 5 singles.
