Men's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight UMAC Title

SUPERIOR, Wis. – In the world of sports, a dynasty is defined as a team or individual that dominates their sport or league for an extended length of time (copyright Wikipedia). If this is the true definition, then the Yellowjacket men's tennis team can officially be tabbed a dynasty.

Friday afternoon the Yellowjacket men needed a little more than an hour to defeat Bethany Lutheran College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play, 7-0 Friday at the Yellowjacket Outdoor Tennis Complex.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Yellowjackets (8-13, 4-0 UMAC), but more importantly it clinched the UMAC North Division Championship, making the Yellowjackets the top UMAC seed when the UMAC Tournament commences next weekend at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. They will take on the No. 2 seed from the UMAC South Division in the UMAC semifinals.

The championship was the fourth in a row for the Yellowjackets, who now won 31 consecutive UMAC regular season matches dating back to April 17, 2021.

The Yellowjackets took the doubles point and then rolled over the Vikings in singles play, winning every match in straight sets.

Match Notes
  • The Yellowjackets won matches at No. 3 doubles, No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles by walkover, as Bethany Lutheran didn't have a full complement of players Friday.

  • Haugen and Chu inched their doubles record above .500 Friday, improving to 7-6.
  • Haugen was also the first singles player to wrap up Friday, winning his match at No. 4 singles in perfect fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Chu quickly followed suit, matching his doubles partner with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
  • Abarca Pino clinched the victory, and the UMAC championship for the Yellowjackets, with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.
  • Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) closed things out for the Yellowjackets, winning his match at No. 2 singles with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score.
