Men's Tennis Falls to MSOE, UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – A day after wrapping up their fourth consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title, the Yellowjacket men's tennis team was back on the court Saturday, playing a pair of matches on the road – a neutral site match against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and a second match at UW-Eau Claire.
 
The Yellowjackets found the going tough Saturday, as they fell to MSOE 5-2 before dropping the regular season finale to UW-Eau Claire, 7-0. Both matches were played at the John and Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center in Eau Claire.
 
With the losses, the Yellowjackets fall to 8-15 on the year.
 
Match One Notes
  • Saturday's match was the first-ever meeting between the Yellowjackets and MSOE.
  • MSOE earned the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots.
  • The Yellowjacket pair of Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) won their match at No. 2 doubles, 6-2 over MSOE's Joe Chong and Emilio Ulloa.
  • Guetten Chaves earned a point in singles play for the Yellowjackets, getting the better of MSOE's Carlos Patino at No. 1 singles. Guetten Chaves won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
  • For Guetten Chaves, the win was his fourth in a row and sixth in his last seven starts in singles play.
  • The other point for the Yellowjackets came at No. 3 singles. Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) was ahead in the first set 6-5 when he opponent retired, giving Chhabra the match.
  • At No. 5 singles, Sakakibara dropped the first set to Pedro Mendes 3-6 before bouncing back to take the second set 6-3. The pair went to a tiebreaker, with Mendes taking it 10-7 to win the third set 1-0 and the match two sets to one.
  • Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) also had a close singles match in the No. 4 slot. Abarca Pino dropped the first set 6-7 after losing the tiebreaker 3-7 before falling in the second set 5-7.
Match Two Notes
  • Guetten Chaves had another strong showing later in the day against UW-Eau Claire. In doubles play, partnered against with Sakakibara, the Yellowjackets rolled to a 6-1 win over Eau Claire's Sam Murillo and Pablo Rincon in the No. 2 position.
  • Eau Claire, after earning the doubles point, won singles matches at the No. 5, 6 and 4 positions to clinch the match.
  • At No. 1 singles, Guetten Chaves took the opening set 6-3 before falling 2-6 in the second set. Eau Claire's Ethan Wurtzel defeated Guetten Chaves 10-7 in the tiebreaker to take the third set and the match.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is the 2025 UMAC Tournament. The Yellowjackets will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the UMAC North Division, and they will face Principia, the second place team in the UMAC South Division, in the UMAC semifinals. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
