Polars Complete Series Sweep of Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Sunday afternoon saw the Yellowjacket baseball team wrap up its conference series with Crown College. The opening game saw the Polars emerge in extra innings by an 8-6 decision, utilizing the long ball to their advantage.
 
Sunday's action at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex featured a similar fate, as a total of six homers were hit between the two teams. When the dust settled on the day, the Polars left Superior with wins of 18-10 and 5-2, completing the series sweep of the Yellowjackets.
 
Game One Notes
  • The Polars struck first in their first ups with a single up the middle, but the 'Jackets responded in the bottom half of the inning after Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover) walked. He gave way to Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo), who drilled a two-run homer to bring UWS out in front 2-1.
  • During the next half inning Crown answered back, as a two-out walk set up Bryan Gerbers for a three-run shot to center, retaking the lead at 5-2.
  • Maxton Howell (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) leveled the scoring in the bottom of the third, clubbing a three-run shot to score Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville), who reached on a walk and a single, respectively.
  • CC used a five-run fourth to take a 10-5 lead. In the sixth Cole Ondrus (Esko, Minn./Esko) logged an RBI single to score Voight who singled through the right side to lead off the frame.
  • Superior's bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh with a two out triple from Voight. He would later score on a wild pitch to chop the Polars' lead down to just two at 11-9.
  • The final blow to the Yellowjackets came in the top of the eighth, as Crown batted around for seven runs off six hits and an error.
  • Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) was tabbed with the loss in the opening game of the doubleheader. His record now stands at 3-2.
  • Voight, Howell and Ondrus each had a pair of hits in the game. Steiner and Howell contributed three RBIs, as well.
  • Both Payton Mangold (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) (3.1 innings) and Christian Pretasky (Meadowlands, Minn./South Ridge) (1.1 innings) toed the rubber and didn't allow a hit.
 
Game Two Notes
  • A two-out homer by Gerbers gave Crown another 1-0 lead early in the first. Both teams would go without a run scored until the Yellowjackets evened things up in the bottom of the fifth, as Devin Frydenlund (Belleville, Wis./Belleville) doubled to right field to score Chase Oxborough (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park), who singled to left field to begin the frame.
  • The next half inning saw Crown use two runs and two hits to regain a 3-1 lead.
  • Josh Pritchard (Surrey, British Columbia/Clayton Heights Secondary) drew the start for the Yellowjackets in the final game of the series, pitching five innings of allowing just four hits on two runs while striking out three.
  • After Pritchard exited, the Polars put a run and two hits on reliever Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle). He would pitch three innings and allow four hits and just one run while fanning three.
  • The Polars logged two more runs and three hits in the top of the ninth. In the Yellowjackets' final frame, Oxborough doubled down the right field line. He scored after a Polar wild pitch, but Crown was able to shut the door and win 5-2.
  • Oxborough led offensively in the finale, going 3-4 with two runs scored. The other Yellowjacket with multiple hits was Frydenlund, going 2-5 with an RBI.
  • Aiden Pfeifer (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Adam Jensen (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) combined pitching efforts in the ninth inning.
 
The Yellowjackets (11-12, 6-3 UMAC) hit the road to take on North Central. Saturday's doubleheader at Gleason Fields is set to begin at 1 p.m.
