Late Game Heroics Lead Baseball to Sweep of Husson

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Following a split with Beloit College on Sunday, the Yellowjacket baseball team returned for another doubleheader Monday, taking on Husson University from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC).

Superior put up a pair of runs early and applied more offensive pressure, holding on for a 7-2 win in game one. In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams engaged in a phantasmagorical classic that would require an additional inning, but after it was all said and done, the Yellowjackets came out with a gritty 12-9 victory to sweep the Eagles.

Game One Notes
  • Two early runs came in the bottom of the first inning. Paddy Kelly (Andover, Minn./Andover) singled to center and was brought around on a Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville) single to left field. He would later come around courtesy of a wild pitch.
  • The Eagles tied things up in their half of the third inning, utilizing a double and single to level the scoring at 2-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Superior collected five runs off six hits. Highlighting the barrage of runs was Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), who hit a one-out home run to right field.
  • Hits from Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover), Sybrant and Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would secure the final three runs scored for the 'Jackets, leading 7-2.
  • Following five innings of allowing just two unearned runs, Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) was relieved by Ryker Ebert (Cameron, Wis./Cameron), who threw the final two innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out two to shut the door.
  • Romans allowed six hits while striking out eight opposing hitters. His record moves to 1-1 on the campaign.
  • Dagostino led with three hits, going 3-3 with a run scored.

Game Two Notes
  • UWS led by five runs after Chase Oxborough (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) singled to right center, plating Cody Glasheen (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale), who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
  • Glasheen would club a bases-loaded two RBI single up the middle in the top of the third, before Oxborough drew a walk and Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • After allowing three runners on base, Matt Holmes clubbed a grand slam to bring his squad within one at 5-4.
  • The Yellowjackets responded right away, beginning with a Sybrant double to left-center field. O'Dwyer later plate him with a sacrifice fly to right field to lead 6-4.
  • Husson wouldn't back down and tied things up in the bottom of the fifth, but the 'Jackets answered the call once again, scoring three runs off two hits featuring a pinch-hit, first-pitch two RBI single off the bat of Wylee Lottman (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg).
  • Leading 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Husson loaded the bases. With two outs in the inning, Matt Holmes hit a ball that ricocheted off the diving effort of O'Dwyer at third, clearing the bases with a three RBI double down the left field line.
  • Husson was inches away from winning the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) entered the game and cut down the potential winning run at home after fielding a comebacker. Later, with two outs in the inning, Lottman bobbled a popup but recovered nicely before the ball hit the turf, giving the Yellowjackets another shot to take the lead.
  • And that, they did. A pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Oxborough also got plunked before Kelly drilled a two RBI single to right, scoring the 12th run for UWS in the nightcap.
  • After a lineout to left field drawn out by Fleig, Logan Zinsmaster (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) made his collegiate debut on the mound. He would draw a pair of flyouts to left field to secure the first save of his Yellowjacket career, leading the 'Jackets to a 12-9 win in eight innings and securing the doubleheader sweep.
  • Carter Thielke (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) toed the rubber for the 'Jackets, pitching three innings before giving way to Adam Jensen (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd). Fleig would enter for an inning before Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) came in and threw 1.1 innings, giving him the victory.
  • Sybrant led offensively, going 2-5 with three runs scored.
  • Husson's Matt Holmes went 2-3 with a run scored and a game-high eight RBIs.

The 'Jackets are back in action Wednesday, facing off against Fitchburg State. The opening pitch is set for 9:30 a.m. CT in Winter Haven, Fla.
