WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – Sunday marked the fourth and final game of the non-conference series with Saint Mary's and the Yellowjacket baseball team. Superior had countless loud outs on the day, barreling baseballs right at the Cardinal defenders. Despite striking first in the bottom of the first inning, SMU would score five runs in three innings that would ultimately lead them to a 6-2 victory over UWS, sweeping the weekend series in Iowa.
Game Notes
- In the first inning the Yellowjackets got their first run of the ball game off a blast to left field off the bat of Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater). As SMU came to the plate in the next half, they hit a pair of solo shots to lead 2-1, and later an RBI double to left center gave them a two-run lead at 3-1.
- Down 5-1 after Saint Mary's plated two more in the middle innings, Will Czech (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) drew a four-pitch walk to plate Isaac Johnson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), but the Cardinals would get out of the jam before adding one more run in the seventh to win 6-2.
- Voight finished going 2-4 with a run scored, while Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville), Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Isaac Johnson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) would each tally hits.
- Suffering the loss on the mound was Carter Thielke (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls), who threw 3.1 innings while allowing three earned runs and seven hits. He gave way to Kevin Rahe (Princeton, Minn./Princeton) and Ryker Ebert (Cameron, Wis./Cameron), throwing 3.2 and 2.0 innings, respectively.
The Yellowjackets will now enter Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Friday as they take on Northwestern. The opening pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Reynolds Field in Saint Paul, Minn.
