ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Yellowjacket baseball hit the road to commence the UMAC portion of their schedule as they played Northwestern in a doubleheader. The 'Jackets and Eagles needed a full extra game in the first half of the doubleheader as Superior won 9-8 in 18 innings. The second game was much shorter but still came down to the wire as the 'Jackets fell on a walk-off hit by pitch 3-2.
Game 1 Notes:
-
The 'Jackets put up a four spot in the first inning as Paddy Kelly (Andover, Minn./Andover) scored the first run on a wild pitch. Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover) scored on a Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) groundout to put the second run on the board.
-
Wylee Lottman (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) singled home Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville) later in the first before the fourth run was scored by Carter Thielke (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) on a fielder's choice.
-
The Yellowjackets answered the Eagles scoring three in the eighth with Lottman knocking in Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) on an RBI double. Lottman would come around to score off a Cody Glasheen (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) single and another run scoring from Chase Oxborough (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) on a fielder's choice.
-
From then on, it was a pitcher's duel as the 'Jackets and Eagles couldn't scratch another run across. In the bottom of the 17th inning, the Eagles had a chance to score but were cut down at the plate by a throw from center field by Thielke.
-
The Yellowjackets used six pitchers, most notably Gio Basile (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North) pitching six innings, all in extras giving up three hits. Adam Jensen (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) earned the win for Superior as he got the final five outs for the 'Jackets.
Game 2 Notes:
-
Pritchard pitched six and a third giving up five hits and two runs, neither of which were earned while fanning eight. Miles Kay (Albertville, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville) replaced Pritchard pitching and inning and two thirds giving up two hits and allowing what turned out to be the winning run on base. Niles Monroe (Belleville, Wis./Belleville) was tagged with the loss pitching a third of an inning and giving up the winning run.
