Superior Completes Sweep of Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. – Following a 7-0 win on Friday, the Yellowjacket baseball team returned for its conference doubleheader Sunday. The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contests were originally scheduled for Saturday, but rain in the forecast postponed things to Sunday which featured temperatures in the 80s.

In game one the Yellowjackets scored early and often, leading to their 16-1 win in the opener. In the second-of-two, the 'Jackets utilized a seven-run second inning and rolled from there to defeat the Knights 20-2.

Game One Notes
  • The Yellowjackets struck for two runs in the first inning courtesy of a blast to right field off the bat of Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater).
  • In the second inning, Carter Thielke (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) hit a ball to right center field and came all the way around to score for an inside the park home run, bringing the lead to 3-0.
  • Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville) clubbed an RBI double before Wylee Lottman (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) would send one over the fence in the top of the third. Following a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly, UWS would maintain control at 8-0.
  • Voight struck again in the top of the sixth with a grand slam to right field, and two batters later Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) hit a three-run shot for the Yellowjackets' 16th run of the game.
  • Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) pitched five innings, allowing just one run while striking out eight in his second victory of the campaign.
  • Ryker Ebert (Cameron, Wis./Cameron) would shut the door for the final two innings, striking out five-of-seven batters he faced.

Game Two Notes
  • After scoring the first run on a wild pitch in inning number one, the Yellowjackets utilized the second inning for six hits and seven runs, spearheaded by a Lottman double and a Thielke triple.
  • The Knights would answer back with a homer from Mark Vogel, cutting the Yellowjacket lead to seven at 8-1.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Dawson Rannow (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) turned on a pitch and sent it over the fence for a solo shot, and later Dagostino hit an RBI single to plate the 10th run of the game.
  • Voight would unleash on his third homer of the day, this time a three-run shot to plate Dagostino and Paddy Kelly (Andover, Minn./Andover), extending Superior's lead to 11 at 13-2.
  • In the seventh inning, the Yellowjackets scored seven runs off two hits and a Knight error. Both Wylee Arro (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) and Mason McKellar (Nashotah, Wis./Arrowhead) clubbed RBI singles late in the inning, plating the 19th and 20th runs of the game for the eventual 20-2 win in seven innings.
  • Receiving the victory on the mound was Josh Pritchard (Surrey, British Columbia/Clayton Heights Secondary), shifting his record to 3-2. He threw four innings, allowing six hits while striking out six. He was relieved by both Gio Basile (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North) and Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle), who combined for the final three innings.
  • Both Rannow and Voight went 3-4 in the game and finished with two and three RBIs, respectively.

The Yellowjackets (15-10, 6-3 UMAC) have a quick turnaround as they take on UW-River Falls in a midweek matchup. Wednesday's first pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at First National Bank River Falls Field.
