After last weekend's losses to conference foes UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville, the Yellowjacket volleyball team closed out their home schedule for the year and hit the road for the remainder of the schedule, beginning with a triangle in Arden Hills, Minn. where they took on Moravian College out of Bethlehem, Pa. and the hosts from Bethel University.

Yellowjackets 3, Moravian 0

The Yellowjackets got back in the win column with a three-game sweep of Moravian in the first match of the day. The Yellowjackets won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-19.

The Yellowjackets fell behind early and trailed 7-5 when a service error pulled them to within one and gave the Yellowjackets the serve. Mikayla Bock (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) proceeded to serve the Yellowjackets into the lead with five straight points. Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) had three kills in that stretch as the Yellowjackets took a 11-7 lead, an edge the Yellowjackets would not give back. With the score tied at 19-19, Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) came through with the kill to push the Yellowjackets back ahead. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) followed with a service ace and then gave the Yellowjackets a four-point lead and they closed out the set with a 25-22 win.

In the second game Moravian came out firing and built an early lead, but the Yellowjackets battled back. Trailing by four at 10-6 the Yellowjackets started climbing back with a Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) kill off a set from Bock to make it a three-point game. Deadrick and Tynen then served the Yellowjackets into the lead at 13-12. The Yellowjackets went on a late run with the match tied 18-18, winning seven of the last eight points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Tynen and Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) had four kills down the stretch to lead the offense.

The Yellowjackets closed out the match with another game that was close until late. With the Yellowjackets down 17-16, Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) picked up the kill to tie the game. The Yellowjackets then won eight of the last 11 points, closing things out on a Dvergsten kill to take the game and the match.

Tynen and Zimmerman led the Yellowjackets with 11 kills each, while Vinokur added 10. Deadrick paced the offense with 25 assists and Bock contributed 18. Tynen had a team best 16 digs and team leader Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) had 11.

Bethel 3, Yellowjackets 1

The momentum didn't carry over into the second match for the Yellowjackets, and unfortunately it looked much the same as both matches last week. The Yellowjackets got off to the start the wanted and took the first game, but Bethel came roaring back, taking the next three to pick up the 3-1 win.

The Yellowjackets took an early lead, winning four of the first five points behind the serve of Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United). Bethel came back and tied the match later at 10-10. The teams traded points and were tied at 19-19 when the Yellowjackets seized control of the game. Back-to-back kills from Zimmerman and Vinokur gave the Yellowjackets the lead for good and Autio's kill closed out the game to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

The second game saw the Yellowjackets win the first three points before Bethel erased the deficit and surged ahead. Bethel opened up an 11-6 lead, but this time the Yellowjackets battled their way back. Down three, a Dvergsten kill and pair of Bethel errors drew the Yellowjackets even at 16-16. Bethel took an 18-17 lead and didn't look back, tying the match at 1-1.

In the early stages of the third game neither team opened up a lead of more than two points. The Yellowjackets had a 10-9 lead but Bethel again came back, opening up a lead that was big as five points at 19-14. Kills by Deadrick, Tynen, and Dvergsten closed the gap to three, but it was too little too late and the Royals finished off the game and took a 2-1 lead.

Bethel rolled in the fourth game to close out the match. The Royals won seven of the first ten points and eventually opened up a ten-point lead at 17-7. The Yellowjackets did close the gap some, but not nearly enough and Bethel cruised to a 25-17 win in the game to gain the match victory.

For the second match in a row Tynen and Zimmerman were tied with the most kills in the match, each finishing with 17. Deadrick set things up with 34 assists while Bock had 16. As a team the Yellowjackets had an attack percentage of .226.

On defense Peterson picked up 21 digs, followed by Tynen with 18. Walerius finished the match with 12 digs and Deadrick added 11 for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (15-8, 1-5 WIAC) will play another triangle on Saturday, when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on Carleton College and Buena Vista University. The matches are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
