Box Score

St. Scholastica 3, Yellowjackets 2

For the second time in as many weeks, the "Border Battle" between UW-Superior and the College of St. Scholastica took center stage. Unlike last week's frigid men's soccer contest, this weeks edition heated things up indoors, as the school's volleyball teams squared off on the hardwood of St. Scholastica's Reif Gymnasium.

And it looked like the Yellowjackets had things well in hand, up two games to one and sitting on match point in the fourth game, but the Saints came roaring back and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, winning the final two games to earn a hard fought 3-2 win over the Yellowjackets.

The match was another monster outing for senior Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), who finished the night with 24 kills and 28 digs, both match highs.

Tynen helped get the Yellowjackets rolling in the opening set, as she and Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) each had kills to stake the Yellowjackets to the early lead. In a one-point game with the Yellowjackets leading 7-6, Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) dropped a kill on the Saints and brought service back to the Yellowjackets. Three points later on the serve of Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) the Yellowjackets had a five-point lead. With the lead staying at five (16-11), the Yellowjackets blew the game open. Kills from Autio and Vonasek and a series of St. Scholastica errors while Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) was serving helped the Yellowjackets put things out of reach, and the took the opening set 25-15.

St. Scholastica took the lead early in the second set, but the Yellowjackets came back and tied things at 4-4. A pair of Vonasek kills helped the Yellowjackets go on a 6-2 run and take a 10-6 lead. The Saints followed with a run of their own and regained the lead at 15-14. For the second time in the set the Yellowjackets again had an extended run, breaking the tie and opening up a 20-16 advantage. But just like they did earlier, the Saints answered. Down 23-19, the Saints won seven of the next eight points to come from behind and win the second set 26-24.

The Yellowjackets got their swagger back in the third game, taking the lead early and holding onto it throughout. A Tynen kill gave the Yellowjackets at lead at 8-7. The lead bulged to four at 17-13 when the Yellowjackets got the ball back as a result of a St. Scholastica service error. Peterson, aided by a pair of Tynen kills, then served the Yellowjackets to four consecutive points to blow the game open. Now up eight, the Yellowjackets won four of the final six points to win the third set 25-15 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set the Saints jumped out to the early lead and pulled ahead by five at 11-6 when the Yellowjackets elected to call a timeout. The reset worked, and Autio and Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) had back-to-back kills to trim the deficit to three. The Yellowjackets closed to within two before the Saints exploded, going on a 5-0 to blow the set open. Or so they thought. Trailing 18-11, the Yellowjackets rebounded, winning 11 of the next 12 points to surge into the lead. Autio and Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) had kills while Walerius was serving, and later, Tynen had back-to-back kills on Zimmerman's service to give the Yellowjackets the lead. They pulled away and led 24-21 and appeared to have the set, and the match in hand, but the Saints had other ideas. St. Scholastica battled back, winning four straight points to take a 25-24 lead. Tynen answered with a kill to tie it up, but the Saints took the next two points, winning the set 27-25 and evening the match at 2-2.

The momentum carried over to the fifth and deciding game for the Saints. Trailing 3-1 early, St. Scholastica won the next four points to jump ahead, and they would never give up the lead again. A Zimmerman kill did tie the set at 7-7, but that was as close as the Yellowjackets would get. The Saints would win eight of the next 11 points to close out the match, winning the decisive set 15-10.

Autio had 14 kills for the Yellowjackets, who also got 12 from Vonasek and 11 from Zimmerman. For the match the Yellowjackets had 69 kills and an attack percentage of .279. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) once again paced the offense, finishing the match with a season-high 65 assists.

On defense, Peterson had 18 digs while Zimmerman had 15 and Walerius added 12. Vonasek had three of the Yellowjackets' six blocks in the match.

The Yellowjackets (16-13, 1-7 WIAC) have now dropped three matches in a row. They will look to get back on the winning track and close out the regular season on a high note, when they play their final matches of the 2013 season at the Gustavus Triangular on Saturday, November 2. The Yellowjackets will play Gustavus Adolphus at 12:30 p.m. and Buena Vista University at 2:30 p.m.
