The Yellowjacket volleyball team took to the court for the final time in the 2013 season on Saturday, competing in a triangular at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. After dropping a tough, five-set match in their first action of the day, they finished strong, sweeping the host Gusties to close out 2013 with a win.

Buena Vista 3, Yellowjackets 2

The Yellowjackets got off to a good start in their first match of the day, winning the first set by a 25-21 score. After Buena Vista scored to take a 20-15 lead, the Yellowjackets started their epic rally to win the set. A service error gave the Yellowjackets the point and the ball and Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) followed with a pair of kills to cut the deficit to two. A block by Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) and Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) pulled the Yellowjackets to within one, but Buena Vista answered to regain the two-point lead. A Dvergsten kill gave the ball back to the Yellowjackets and Deadrick served five straight points to give the Yellowjackets the opening set.

Deadrick started the second set with an ace, but Buena Vista quickly came back to take the lead. Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) helped the Yellowjackets rally and served them into the lead at 12-10, but once again Buena Vista quickly rallied to lead. The teams traded points and were tied at 17-17, 20-20 and 23-23, but the Yellowjackets were unable to seize the lead one last time and Buena Vista tied the match.

The third set was another tight one, with neither team able to grab a big lead. After being tied 4-4 Buena Vista pulled away and opened up a 10-6 lead. The Yellowjackets, on consecutive kills from Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks), Deadrick and Dvergsten jumped back to within a point, and later another Dvergsten kill tied the score at 11-11. Like boxers in a heavyweight title fight the teams again traded blows before Buena Vista took their second four-point lead of the match at 18-14. Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) helped change the momentum with a pair of kills and the Yellowjackets started rolling. Kills from Vonasek and Tynen kept things close and then Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) and Tynen went back-to-back to tie things at 22-22. A Deadrick ace gave the Yellowjackets the lead before Autio and Dvergsten closed it out with kills to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead in the match.

2013 VB Seniors

But as good as the third set was for the Yellowjackets, things didn't carry over to the fourth and Buena Vista again drew even. A Deadrick service error gave Buena Vista the lead and they blew the set open quickly, winning seven of the first ten points. Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) served the Yellowjackets back to within two, but Buena Vista regained control and pulled away
, never leading by fewer than three points on their way to a 25-14 win in the set.

The fifth set looked like it was going to be over in a hurry, as again Buena Vista moved out quickly to take the lead. The Yellowjackets battled back and finally drew even at 9-9. They took their first lead of the set, 13-12 on a Katie Boone (Mindoro, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) serve. The took the lead again at 15-14 and were looking at match point, but were never able to get the winner. A kill by Autio evened the game at 20-20, but Buena Vista closed it out, winning the final two points to take the set and the match.

Tynen led the Yellowjackets with 17 kills, followed by Autio with 13 and Vonasek with 10. Deadrick had 54 assists and three aces, both team highs. Defensively Peterson had 27 digs, while Deadrick and Zimmerman contributed 16 apiece.

Yellowjackets 3, Gustavus Adolphus 2

After the tough loss the Yellowjackets had to immediately regain focus and take on the hosts from Gustavus. And regain their focus is what they did, sweeping the Gusties by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20.

Dvergsten and Tynen started the match with kills to give the Yellowjackets an early lead. Autio and Zimmerman followed suit as the Yellowjackets opened up a 6-1 lead. Gustavus battled back several times and eventually pulled to within a point of the Yellowjackets, but were never able to tie it. With the score at 21-19 favoring the Yellowjackets, a pair of errors gave them a four-point cushion and then Zimmerman closed it out with a pair of kills to give the Yellowjackets a one-set lead.

It was more of the same in the second set as the Yellowjackets led most of the way. With the score tied 4-4 Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) gave the Yellowjackets the lead. Mikayla Bock (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) then served three straight points to make it a four-point contest. The lead was three at 13-10 when Deadrick rattled off three aces in a row to put things out of reach. The Gusties clawed their way back to within one, but it was too little too late and the Yellowjackets escaped with a victory in the second set.

The Yellowjackets led from start to finish in the third set. A kill from Tynen started things off and the Yellowjackets pulled away, opening up an eight-point lead at 13-5. Gustavus cut the deficit in half, but Vonasek stopped the bleeding and started another Yellowjacket rally. Tynen and Zimmerman went back-to-back to make it a five-point contest and then Tynen ended it, picking up her final kill as a Yellowjacket and giving the Yellowjackets a 25-20 victory.

Zimmerman led the way in the second match, finishing with a total of 10 kills. She was the only Yellowjacket in double figures. Deadrick had 29 assists and four aces. Deadrick also led the team in digs with 10, followed by Zimmerman with nine.

The Yellowjackets close out the season with a 17-14 overall mark and a 1-7 record in the WIAC.
