Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket volleyball team took the court today with the hope of improving on their 4-2 record. After playing a pair of matches Friday evening in Minneapolis, the scene shifted to St. Paul where they competed in the Hamline University Invitational.

In their first match of the day the Yellowjackets faced off against Crown College. Crown College has been struggling this season, having entered the match against Superior with a record of 0-4. The Yellowjackets played the Storm twice a year ago and came away victorious both times. In the second match of the day, the Yellowjackets took on the host team, Hamline University, who put their undefeated (5-0) record on the line.

Yellowjackets 3, Crown 0

The Yellowjackets opened the day in fine style, easily dispatching Crown in straight sets by scores of 25-8, 25-19, and 25-18.

The Yellowjackets set the tone early in the first set, quickly jumping out to a lead that proved insurmountable. The second and third sets were much closer, but the Storm never posed a serious threat in either, allowing the Yellowjackets to cruise to a victory and improve to 5-2 on the year.

Sophomore Desirae Marcott (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) was the star on offense for the Yellowjackets, leading the team with match-best nine kills. Marcott also had an attack percentage of .467, which was bested only by Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) who attacked in the match at a .556 clip. Nightingale had six kills to go along with a team-high three aces, while Gabrielle Olson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) contributed five kills to the effort.

Nightingale and Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) paced the Yellowjackets defensively against Crown, each coming in with six digs.

Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 25 assists in the opener.

Hamline 3, Yellowjackets 0

In their second and final match of the day, Superior faced a Hamline team that was a perfect 5-0 on the year entering the late-afternoon showdown. The Pipers have been so dominant this season that they have only dropped one set to date (15-1).

Hamline is a force to be reckon with, having five players who have recorded 25 or more kills thus far on the season. However, on the other side of the net the Yellowjackets employ junior kill-specialist Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko), and her 81 kills are nothing to sneeze at.

Despite the new location, the Yellowjackets followed a similar script to Friday – as it seemed that they ran out of energy against Hamline.

Superior played the Pipers tough in the first set, with the teams trading points but the Yellowjackets holding the lead throughout. The visitors stretched the edge to six points at 22-16, but were unable to put the Pipers away. A 9-2 run thrust the Pipers into the lead and they finally closed out the Yellowjackets in extra points, winning 30-28.

From there, Hamline looked in control. They took an early lead in the second set and never looked back until the set was over, winning 25-21. Down two games to none in the match, the Yellowjackets would have to win three straight sets in order to capture the match victory, but Hamline wouldn't have any of it.

In the third frame the Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead, building the edge to as much as four at 13-9. Hamline came right back, however and took the lead at 17-16, a lead they would never relinquish. Hamline won the set 25-20, and the match 3-0, sending the Yelllowjackets back to the Northland with a 2-2 record on the weekend and a 5-3 record overall.

Bandelin paced the Yellowjackets offensively with 12 kills, the only Yellowjacket to reach double digits. Deadrick contributed 29 assists. On the defensive side Deadrick also had 11 digs, bettered only by Walerius (26) and Jordan Olson (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids) (12).

Superior will have its home opener Tuesday, September 9 when they will host Bethel University and the College of St. Scholastica in a triangular at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. The Yellowjackets (5-3, 0-0 WIAC) will play Bethel at 4:00 p.m., followed by a match between Bethel and St. Scholastica at 6:00 p.m. The day will close out with the Yellowjackets taking on their cross-river rivals from CSS at 8:00 p.m. All matches will be streamed live through the iFan Sports Network at www.ifan.tv.
