Janes Named UMAC Player of the Year, Schaffner Coach of the Year; Five Earn All-UMAC in Men’s Tennis

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Junior Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) has been named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, leading the UW-Superior men's tennis team's conference year-end awards, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Janes, who becomes the Yellowjackets' first UMAC Player of the Year in men's tennis, was also selected an All-UMAC honoree for the second consecutive season. Senior Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) also earned first-team honors, while senior Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) and freshmen Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) and Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima) were named to the second team.

Third-year head coach CeeJay Schaffner earned UMAC Coach of the Year honors for the first time, helping the Yellowjackets to their first-ever UMAC tournament title with a 16-5 overall record with a perfect 8-0 conference mark.
 
Junior Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) was the Yellowjackets' representative on the UMAC Sportsmanship Team.
 
Janes is 14-6 overall this season in singles, including a 7-1 mark in UMAC play at the top spot. He is also 14-6 in doubles with a 6-1 mark in the league. He holds the UWS record for career singles victories (27) and tied for third all-time with 24 doubles wins. His 14 wins in singles this season are third all-time in a single season in school history, while his 14 doubles wins are tied for third.
 
Janes is a four-time UMAC Player of the Week this season, winning the honor April 11 and 25 as well as Feb. 21 and 14.
 
Luiz de Melo Guedes is a team-leading 17-3 in singles action this season, including a 6-0 mark in the UMAC. He is 14-1 overall at No. 2 singles. He is also 16-5 overall in doubles and 6-2 in the UMAC.
 
In just two seasons at UWS, Luiz de Melo Guedes ranks second in program history with 26 singles wins and is has posted an .839 singles winning percentage, the career school record. He has the second most doubles wins in a career at 25, while also posting the most singles victories for a season in school history.
 
Luiz de Melo Guedes won UMAC Player of the Week twice this season -- May 2 and Feb. 7.
 
Potz Nagy is 11-10 overall in singles action this season, including a 9-5 mark at No. 3. He leads the team with a 17-5 record in doubles, going 15-4 at the top spot. He holds the Superior career record with 26 doubles victories and has 22 singles wins, which ranks third. Potz Nagy's 17 doubles wins are the most in a single season in the history of the program.
 
Gilbertson is 16-5 overall in singles, including 7-0 in the UMAC and 7-4 in doubles. His singles win total is already tied for fifth all-time in school history. 
 
Sato is 10-8 in singles and 14-4 in doubles. He went 5-1 in the UMAC in singles and 6-1 in doubles. His 14 doubles wins this season are third most all-time in a single season for the Yellowjackets.
 
UWS earned its first-ever UMAC tournament title Saturday in a 5-4 victory over Northwestern and with it the league automatic qualification into the NCAA tournament. The 'Jackets face North Central (Ill.) in the opening round of regional play at UChicago's Stagg Tennis Courts Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
