ALTOONA, Wis. -- Sophomore
Ian Bundy (Austin, Minn./Austin) shot an opening-round 6-over-par 77, tying for 21st, to lead the UW-Superior men's golf team on the first day of the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational at Eau Claire Golf and Country Club on Sunday.
Bundy's round on the 6,707-yard, par-71 course tied his career collegiate low, set at the Yellowjacket Invitational last April 27 at Spooner Golf Club, and helped Superior's second team in this weekend's event to a tie for ninth overall through 18 holes. The Yellowjackets' 'B' team shot 34-over 318, topping Superior's top team, which is 12th at 44-over 328.
Bundy posted 11 pars in his round and dropped a birdie on the 511-yard par-5 18th hole. Classmate
Brayden Tyman (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) shot 8-over 79 and is tied for 31st. Tyman birdied the par-4 seventh and par-5 13th to go with seven pars.
Sophomore
Trey Shaw (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) shot 9-over 80 for a 41st-place tie in his opening round. He birdied the par-4 eighth hole and had eight pars.
Junior
Bryce Wainio (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl) shot 82 to tie for 56th in a round that consisted of three birdies -- including consecutively on Nos. 15 and 16 -- as well as the par-4 third. Classmate
T.J. Sitek (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) also shot 82 with birdies on the par-3 sixth and par-5 ninth holes.
All five members of the Yellowjackets' top team shot in the 80s to begin the tournament. Junior
Taylor Burger (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led the group at 80 with a birdie on No. 9 and nine pars. Sophomore
Cody Stanisich (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) shot 81, tying for 49th. He birdied the second, 12th and 15th holes, but had eight bogeys and two doubles.
Senior
Charles Martin (Blainville, Quebec/École internationale Lucille-Teasdale) shot 82, birdying the second hole in his round. Sophomores
Conner Willard (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Nate Burke (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) each shot 85 to tie for 72nd overall.
UW-Eau Claire fired a first-round team score of 296 to lead the tournament by one over Bethel. The Royals' Conor Schubring -- the only player in the 93-man field to shoot under par -- shot 2-under 69. He leads Carson Brock (UW-Eau Claire), Jack Robbel (Augsburg) and Harold Dobernecker (Central) by three strokes in the individual standings.
The final round of the tournament is set for 10 a.m., on Monday.
