Women's Tennis Falls to UW-La Crosse

ORLANDO – The Yellowjacket men's tennis team opened its spring trip Monday, and Tuesday it was the women's turn. After watching the Yellowjacket men play a pair of matches, the women got in on the act, starting their Florida trip with a match against UW-La Crosse.

Things started well for the Yellowjackets, but the momentum fizzled and they came up short in their attempt at back-to-back wins, falling 8-1 to UW-La Crosse at the United States Tennis Association National Campus.

The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 6-7 on the year.

It looked good for the Yellowjackets early. After falling behind 1-0 they came back and tied it when the duo of Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and Maya Haupt (Nuertingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg/Hoelderlin Gymnasium Nuertingen) got the win at No. 1 doubles, defeating UW-La Crosse's top team of Tasha Bailey and Hannah Cady by an 8-6 score. La Crosse would regain the lead before doubles play was done, and then cruised to the win, sweeping the singles matches.

Match Notes
  • Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) played a close match at No. 3 doubles before falling 8-5.
  • Stella Harris (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) teamed up at No. 2 doubles.
  • Tejada and Haupt lost matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
  • Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) had a close match at No. 4 singles. She dropped the first set 6-3 and was within a break of extending the match to a third set before falling in the second, 7-5.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a match against Illinois Wesleyan. The first serve is set for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the USTA National Campus.
