Pioneers Defeat Yellowjackets 5-2

Box Score NEW BERLIN, Wis. – Historically speaking, the Yellowjacket men's tennis team has never shied away from a rugged non-conference schedule. In recent years, the 'Jackets have taken part in the ITA Midwest Regional, which features the top talent in the region, followed by a slew of more non-conference matchups.

The last time the Yellowjacket men's tennis team took the courts, you'd have to turn back your calendars by over three months. More specifically, Oct. 12. The Yellowjackets traveled to the Green Island Tennis Courts to face a pair of tough Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foes in UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse. The first of two came against the Pointers, taking them down by a 4-3 decision before dropping yet another close final score of 4-3 to the Pointers.

UWS looked to return to action the following day, but inclement weather at the Sand Valley Grass Courts forced the 'Jackets and Ripon College to postpone their match to a later date.

Friday evening Superior returned to action, traveling to the Princeton Club to face Carroll University. The 'Jackets had the upper hand in doubles action, earning close victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions for the first team point, but the Pioneers took five-of-six in singles play to earn a 5-2 victory over UWS.

Match Notes
  • Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) and Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) duked it out at the No. 1 position, but the Pioneer duo of Daniel Ezcurra and Adrian Gomez bested the Yellowjackets 6-4.
  • Superior gained the upper hand in the final two doubles matches. Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) downed the Pio duo of Andrew Labelle and Felix Persson 6-3, while Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) and Brandon Chu (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) duked it out and gained the upper hand by 7-6 (7-5) over Mark Trinka and Jack McCaffery.
  • Guetten Chaves, slotted at the No. 1 singles slot, fell to Gomez 6-4, 6-4.
  • Kanugovi logged the lone singles win for the 'Jackets, slotted in the second position, after his Pioneer counterpart retired.
  • Carroll upended the Yellowjackets in Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles. Chhabra (No. 3) fell 6-1, 6-2, while Chu (No. 5) and Sakakibara (No. 6) lost 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
  • Abarca Pino took the opening game 6-4, but McCaffery rallied in the second with a 6-3 win. In the tiebreaker, McCaffery earned the victory 10-7 to close out the evening.

The Yellowjackets are back at it Saturday, facing off against UW-Whitewater. The opening serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Lake Geneva Tennis.
