Besonen, Abarca Pino Named UMAC Athletes of the Week

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Tuesday the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) revealed its weekly award winners for the week of Jan. 20-26, and two Yellowjackets picked up accolades.

Senior guard Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) captured honors in women's basketball, while junior Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) picked up athlete of the week honors in the north division.

Besonen compiled 62 points in last week's UMAC contests. Against Northwestern she set a new career-high in scoring with 32 points, shooting 59 percent from the field to lead the 'Jackets to victory. She would spearhead the Yellowjackets at home against Minnesota Morris Saturday, scoring 30 points and shooting 63 percent from midrange to pace Superior to two more conference wins.

Men's tennis opened the second half of their season over the weekend, taking on Carroll and UW-Whitewater. Friday saw Abarca Pino duked it out in doubles play with Brandon Chu (Rogers, Minn./Rogers), and the duo earned a 7-6 (7-5) victory over their Pio counterparts.

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team will travel to St. Bonifacius Wednesday, taking on Crown College. The opening tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m. in the Wild Athletic Center.

The Yellowjacket men's tennis team returns to action Saturday, facing off against Luther and Macalester. First serve against the Norse is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. inside the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
