SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On the heels of winning the program's first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular and tournament championship, the Yellowjacket women's tennis saw eight of its student-athletes claim postseason recognition, the league announced Tuesday.
Superior saw
Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills), Elif Oezen and
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) receive spots on the All-UMAC First Team, while the second team consisted of
Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee),
Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton). The 'Jacket duo of Anouk Bluemm and
Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) were logged to the honorable mention squad. Curtis also represented UWS on the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Furthermore, Yellowjacket head coach
CeeJay Schaffner received the league's coach of the year honor.
Curtis displayed a strong sophomore season on her way to collecting the first All-UMAC First Team selection of her career. In singles she stands with an overall record of 17-4, including ten wins at the No. 3 position. She boasted a six-match winning streak from Oct. 19-Feb. 9 before logging a seven-match winning streak from Mar. 29-Apr. 26. In doubles action, Curtis is 15-8 overall and entered the postseason tournament with an eight-match winning streak alongside Jonas.
Oezen's debut season was strong, leading to her first postseason honor from the UMAC. Her singles record currently sits at 16-9 overall while holding a nine-match winning streak, playing at Nos. 1-3 positions. Oezen has joined forces with five different partners for doubles play and has found the most success with Wilfong, who have gone a perfect 6-0 in the second and third spots.
Wilfong's work in her senior year resulted in an All-UMAC First Team distinction. Despite dropping her first singles match of the 2024-25 season, she has rolled to 12-straight victories to boast an overall record of 12-1 and a 3-0 sweep of UMAC opponents. In doubles play she holds a nine-match winning streak while standing 15-5 overall. In her last ten matches, Wilfong is 9-1 while partnering with Bluemm and Oezen.
Drew's junior season saw her earn a spot on the league's second team. Her work in singles play sees an overall record of 9-3 with a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play. At the No. 6 slot she holds a 6-3 record and boasted a six-match winning streak from Mar. 10-Apr. 26. Doubles action sees Drew hold a 6-6 mark, winning five at the third position alongside Jonas.
Jonas garnered an All-UMAC Second Team distinction after a strong sophomore campaign. She currently holds a singles mark of 18-3, featuring 12 wins at the fifth spot and a nine-match winning streak. Doubles action treated Jonas well this season, as she holds the program record for most doubles wins. The 2024-25 campaign sees her hold a team-leading 18 wins, while boasting an 8-1 record in her last ten matches.
Tejada collects another second team honor after her junior year. She currently holds a four-match winning streak in singles at 7-5 overall, all at the top position. In doubles play she emerged victorious against both Martin Luther and Minnesota Morris, winning alongside Araujo De Barros by 6-3 decisions. Furthermore, Tejada boasts a three-match winning streak in both singles and doubles play.
Bluemm was tabbed with an honorable mention citation in her debut season. She currently holds an 8-8 record in singles play, competing in both the first and second positions. Bluemm is winners of her last four singles matches, while boasting a conference record of 3-1 in doubles play alongside Wilfong at Nos. 2-3 positions.
Araujo De Barros receives her second honorable mention award from the UMAC. She currently paces the Yellowjackets in singles action with a 19-3 overall record. In the third spot she holds a perfect 4-0 record while posting a 12-2 mark at the No. 4 spot. Furthermore, she began the season with a seven-match winning streak and currently maintains an eight-match winning streak. Doubles action sees Araujo De Barros hold a UMAC record of 2-1, all of which at the top position.
The Yellowjackets received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after their 4-1 win over Greenville in the UMAC Championship match. They will take on Hope College Thursday at 10 a.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Stagg Tennis Courts in Chicago, Ill.
