SAINT PETER, Minn. – Friday marked day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional and the Midwest Invite, hosted at various locations within the greater Saint Peter area.
Match Notes
- In singles action at the ITAs, Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) received a bye in the opening round before facing off against UW-La Crosse. He fell 6-3 in the opener before winning 6-4, forcing a tiebreaker that saw the Eagles prevail with a 10-3 decision.
- Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) fell to Grant Idoux of Coe College in a pair of 6-1 losses.
- Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) played Grinnell's Maximiliano Gutbezahl, falling 6-4, 6-2 on the day.
- Doubles action featured Guetten Chaves teaming up with Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) to face Murilo Prestes Zeni and Renan Revite of Concordia (Wis.). Superior would take down the Falcons 8-3.
- In the Midwest Invite, Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) defeated Brayden Richardson of Carroll by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
- Sakakibara emerged victorious over Simpson's Grant Love 6-2, 7-5 before winning a gauntlet against Ben Temple from UW-Stevens Point with scores of 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).
- Keanu Lin (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Ryan Casey from Edgewood 6-1, 6-3. He faced his counterpart from Northwestern, ultimately falling with set scores of 6-2, 4-6, 0-1 (8-10).
- Doubles action featured Chhabra and Kanugovi defeat Edgewood's Jon Olafsson and Justin Hutchctoft 8-2 before taking down Luther's Gennaro Dimuro and Gerardo Ramirez Maino 8-6.
- Abarca Pino and Lin took down UW-Eau Claire and Cornell with scores of 8-5.
