SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket men's tennis team has been predicted to finish first according to this year's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) preseason poll, the league revealed Thursday morning.
Superior garnered four-of-five first place votes with 16 points among the league's head coaches. In second place was Northwestern with 12 points, followed by Bethany Lutheran, accumulating 11 points and the final first-place nod.
The Yellowjackets return a trio of all-conference honorees, including senior
Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and the junior tandem of
Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) and
Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School). Guetten Chaves posted a 9-9 record in singles while logging a doubles mark of 12-7. Chhabra garnered seven singles victories and four doubles wins, while Kanugovi capped his sophomore season with nine singles victories and five doubles wins.
Rounding out the league's poll was Martin Luther in fourth place (seven points), followed by Crown (four points.)
The Yellowjackets commence the spring portion of their season Friday, Feb. 13 where they take on UW-Eau Claire and Lawrence. Action is set for the YMCA Tennis Center in Eau Claire, Wis.
