This Week in Yellowjacket Athletics (1/19/2017)

Last Week's Highlights
- The three University of Wisconsin Superior teams at home last weekend - women's and men's basketball and men's hockey - combined to go 6-0-0 on the weekend. The basketball teams swept a weekend Upper Midwest Athletic Conference series against the University of Minnesota Morris and Crown College, while men's hockey knocked off Gustavus Adolphus College and Bethel University.
- In returning to the indoor track & field season, the Yellowjackets swept the UMAC Men's Athlete of the Week honors. Sophomores Matt Swanson () and C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman H.S.) earned the titles of Track and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively.
- Another sophomore picked up conference weekly honors as  forward Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield H.S.) earned the UMAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week title.
- UW-Superior claimed a fourth conference honor as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named senior Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) its WIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week.

Men's Basketball (4-12, 3-5 UMAC)
- The Yellowjackets began their homestand last weekend making a slight resurgence in the conference, securing their first winning streak of the season by defeating Minnesota Morris 85-76 and Crown 84-74. Those wins moved UWS to a tie for sixth-place where they'll meet one of those teams this weekend as the Yellowjackets welcome North Central University to Superior on Friday night. Freshman forward Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) averaged 13.5 points and 13 rebounds in the two wins last week. The Rams fell last time out against Bethany Lutheran College, but had a two-game winning streak of their own in league play before that. Junior guard Travis Voight leads North Central averaging 16.8 points per game on the season. After that, UW-Superior will face another tough task as the UMAC's first-place team, the University of Northwestern, arrives at Mortorelli Gym on Saturday. The Eagles have six-straight victories and are an undefeated 5-0 in road games on the season. Senior Porter Mortell is averaging 16.0 points per game for Northwestern.

Women's Basketball (12-4, 8-0 UMAC)
- The Yellowjackets won their third-straight overall but moved to a perfect 28-0 in conference play since joining the UMAC last season as they picked up a pair of league victories, defeating Minnesota Morris 81-72 in the UMAC Game of the Week on Friday night before a dominant 71-40 victory over Crown on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) led UWS in scoring for the third consecutive game, averaging 18.0 points on the weekend. This weekend, UW-Superior will look to make it four- and five-straight wins and an even 30-0 in the UMAC as the Yellowjackets host North Central and Northwestern. Coming to town Friday night, the Rams have lost 3-of-5 since the turn of the calendar to January. Junior guard Lizzy Swanson is North Central's biggest threat, averaging 18.9 points per game. On the other side, Northwestern has won 4-of-5 in 2017 and is currently third in the league standings. Junior Amy Berglund is averaging 14.6 points and 6.6 rebounds on the season for the Eagles.

Men's Hockey (6-11-1, 0-2-0 WIAC)
- UW-Superior made it two-in-a-row for the first time since a season-opening winning streak as the Yellowjackets knocked off Gustavus Adolphus 5-3 and Bethel 4-1 on the weekend. Senior Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) earned the title of conference player of the week as he had a pair of multi-point games, with a goal and an assist Friday and two goals Saturday. The Yellowjackets will be off for 10 days before their homestand concludes with a non-conference match-up against WIAC foe the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Pointers currently rank No. 4 in the nation according to the U.S. College Hockey Online Division III Poll and picked up a 4-0 victory over UWS in Superior for conference play earlier this season. UWSP will face off against a pair of conference foes this weekend before arriving in Superior. The Pointers are 1-1-1 in their last three.

Women's Hockey (7-9-0, 1-3-0 WIAC)
- The Yellowjackets returned to conference play earlier this week, falling 3-1 to UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday night. This weekend, UW-Superior will begin two-straight weeks of home-and-home series in the WIAC beginning Friday night at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (R.V.) before welcoming the Blugolds to Superior on Saturday afternoon. UW-Eau Claire (12-5-1, 1-1-0 WIAC) is 6-1-1 dating back to the beginning of December and now ranks among the teams receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com Division III Poll. Sophomore Courtney Wittig leads the Blugolds with 16 points on the year including 14 goals. The Yellowjackets knocked off Eau Claire 3-1 on Nov. 18, 2016 earlier this season for their lone conference victory of the year.

Men's and Women's Track & Field
- After award-winning performances by Swanson and Pillath for the men and a strong showing by sophomore Valerie Rowe (Ironwood, Mich./A.D. Johnston H.S.) to lead UW-Superior at last week's Super 8 Open hosted by Bemidji State University, the Yellowjackets will be at home this weekend as they host the Twin Ports Invite where the College of St .Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Bemidji State University, Michigan Technological University, and Lakehead  (Ont.) University will be in Superior to build a tough field. Live coverage will be available via herostiming.com and the Hero's Timing smartphone and tablet app.
