selections.
Men's Basketball (5-13, 4-6 UMAC)
- After picking up its third-consecutive victory last Friday night 81-71 over North Central, UW-Superior put up a valiant effort but saw a buzzer-beating jump shot save Northwestern 83-81 from a Yellowjacket upset bid. Freshman forward
Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) averaged 18.5 points and 12 rebounds on the weekend, while sophomore
Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.) averaged 16.0 points. UWS will be seeking a pair of revenge victories on the road this weekend beginning Friday night as the team travels to Finlandia University. The Lions knocked off the Yellowjackets 87-80 in Superior on Dec. 10, 2016 earlier this season. Finlandia had three players score 21 or more points at Mortorelli Gym. Saturday, UW-Superior will travel to Ashland to take on Northland College in UMAC play. The LumberJacks own a 73-69 victory over the Yellowjackets on Dec. 9, 2016 earlier in the season. Northland hit nine three-pointers in the game, shooting 31.0 percent from range.
Women's Basketball (14-4, 10-0 UMAC)
- UW-Superior made it five straight and rolled to a dominant 72-43 victory last time out against the University of Northwestern in what was a match-up between the top two teams in the UMAC preseason poll. First-year forward
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) averaged 14.0 points per game off the bench last weekend. The Yellowjackets will be on the road this weekend for a rematch with Finlandia University on Friday. UWS knocked off the Lions 79-43 in Superior earlier this season on Dec. 10, 2016. Saturday, the Yellowjackets will travel to Northland College in a UMAC rematch. UW-Superior owns a 71-46 victory at home against the LumberJills back on Dec. 9, 2016. Sophomore
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield H.S.) had 18 points against Northland last time out.
Men's Hockey (6-12-1, 0-2-0 WIAC)
- The Yellowjackets put together one of their strongest efforts of the season but fell after a last-minute goal by the No. 5-ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point on Tuesday night gave the Pointers a non-conference win. It had been a 10-day lay-off for UW-Superior who got goals from senior
Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) (8) and sophomore
Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden/Wenströmska Gymnasium) (4) against Stevens Point. This week, the 'Jackets return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play hitting the road to take on the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Friday night, UWS meets Stout in a rematch after the Blue Devils defeated the Yellowjackets 5-3 in Superior earlier this season on Dec. 2. UW-Superior and UW-Eau Claire will meet for the first time this year on Saturday night and again in the regular season finale in Superior.
Women's Hockey (7-11-0, 1-5-0 WIAC)
- Last week, the Yellowjackets fell by matching 4-1 scores in its home-and-home series against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (R.V.), but the road ahead unfortunately does not get much easier as UW-Superior matches up against the no. 2-ranked team in the nation, the University of the Wisconsin-River Falls in yet another home-and-home series. The Yellowjackets and Falcons will meet in River Falls on Friday night before returning to Wessman Arena on Saturday afternoon. River Falls defeated UWS by a 9-0 final earlier this season at W.H. Hunt Arena.
Men's and Women's Track & Field
- For three-straight selections, the Yellowjackets have taken home UMAC Athlete of the Week honors in men's or women's track & field, or both. UW-Superior will be in Menomonie, Wisconsin this Saturday for the Warren Bowlus Invite hosted by UW-Stout.
