Finger, Moe Pace Yellowjackets to Fourth at Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. – The UW-Superior men's track and field team began second-semester competition with a fourth-place finish among NCAA teams at the Minnesota State Invitational at Myers Field House on Friday.
 
The Yellowjackets scored 30 points in the meet won by host Minnesota State. The Division II Mavericks scored 291.5 points.
 
UWS posted a pair of third-place finishes on the day as senior Derrick Moe (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) was third in the 3,000 meters and freshman Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was third in the 400 meters. Moe ran 8:55.42 and Matheson clocked a UMAC-leading 52.79. The pair collected a combined 12 points I the two events.
 
Moe's time is currently ranks 32nd in NCAA Division III.
 
Moe paced a group of four Superior runners in the 3,000, which also included freshman Michael Butterfield (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) in sixth in a time of 9:30. Sophomore Mitchell Hammer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) was seventh in 9:55.03 and freshman Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) was eighth in 10:11.87. 
 
Senior Tyler Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) ran fourth in the mile in 4:27.69 while sophomore David Collins (Ironwood, Mich./Luther L. Wright) was sixth in the 800 meters in a UMAC-best 2:10.63. Classmate Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona) finished eighth in the 200 meters in 23.80.
 
Finger's time in the mile is 20th best in the nation while Westmayer leads the UMAC in the 200.
 
Freshman thrower Gage Stankiewicz (Esko, Minn./Esko) was sixth overall in the shot put with a mark of 14.03 meters on his sixth and final attempt of the competition to round out the UWS scorers.
 
Superior returns to action next Saturday hosting the Twin Ports Open at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse. Events are set to get underway at 11 a.m.
