SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior men's track and field team cruised to its sixth Upper Midwest Athletic Conference indoor championship at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse on Saturday, winning six more events.
The Yellowjackets scored 254 points in the meet and earned five individual event victories and one relay win on the final day to go with their four wins Friday. UWS won the title by 133 points over second-place Northwestern with 121.
Senior
Derrick Moe (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) won his second event of the weekend, taking the 3,000-meter run Saturday after winning the 5,000 on Friday. Moe ran 9:03.62. Freshman
Gage Stankiewicz (Esko, Minn./Esko) won the shot put with a personal-record mark of 15.70 meters that is currently 15th best in NCAA Division III.
Senior
Tyler Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) won the 800-meter run in 2:01.52 and freshman
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) was the pole vault champion with a personal-record vault of 3.40 meters.
Sophomore
Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona), junior
Steven Pearson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Finger and freshman
Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) teamed to win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:34.35. Westimayer also won the 200-meter dash in 23.46.
Freshman
Michael Butterfield (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) and senior Conner Nelson also scored in the 5,000, finishing fourth and eighth in 9:29.36 ad 9:52.28, respectively. Junior
Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern), senior
Brock Phernetton (Frederic, Wis./Frederic) and junior
Tanner Lee (Siren, Wis./Siren) also picked up points for Superior in the shot put. Ohman (12.97 meters) was fifth, Phernetton (12.31) was sixth and Lee (11.98) was eighth.
Sophomore
David Collins (Ironwood, Mich./Luther L. Wright) and freshman
Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) followed Finger in the 800 meters in second and eighth place. Collins ran 2:03.73 while Doherty clocked 2:06.79. Matheson (second, 23.56) Pearson (third, 23.82) and freshman
Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) (sixth, 23.82) also scored in the 200.
Butterfield (3.25 meters), sophomore
Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) (3.25) and freshman
Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) (3.10), all put up points in the pole vault, finishing second, third and fourth.
Other Superior points came from Foster in the 60-meter hurdles where he was fourth in 9.26 seconds. Westimayer and Schorr were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash in 7.44 and 7.44 and Pearson (11.61 meters) and freshman
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) (11.38 meters) finished fifth and sixth in the triple jump.
Bethany Lutheran placed third in the team standings with 93 points with Minnesota Morris (73) fourth, Crown (59) fifth and North Central (34) sixth.
The Yellowjackets are back in action at Wartburg's NCAA Last-Chance Qualifier next Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
