Butterfield, Stankiewicz Win Events at Saint John’s as ‘Jackets Finish Second

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The UW-Superior men's track and field team won a pair of individual events on the way to a second-place team finish in the Saint John's Last-Minute Invitational at Clemens Stadium on Friday.
 
Freshmen Michael Butterfield (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) and Gage Stankiewicz (Esko, Minn./Esko) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and discus throw, respectively, to highlight the Yellowjackets' 80-point day. The Johnnies won the meet, scoring 301 points, while Concordia (Minn.) was third with 42. Minnesota Morris (41) and St. Thomas (37) rounded out the field.
 
Butterfield clocked 10:42.32 in the steeplechase and Stankiewicz threw 46.22 meters to win the discus.
 
Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.94 meters and Stankiewicz was third in 47.45 meters. Stankiewicz was also fourth in the shot put at 14.47 meters.
 
Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led a group of three 'Jackets in the 100 meters with a third-place time of 11.47. Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona) was sixth in the event in 11.64 and Sebastian Lane (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was 14th in 12.65.
 
Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.18 followed by Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) in fourth (1:01.20) and Schorr (10:02.65) was fifth. Steven Pearson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) placed sixth in 1:02.66 and Mitchell Hammer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) was seventh in 1:09.53.
 
Westimayer placed third in the 200 meters in 22.85 and Lane clocked 25.62 for 11th place.
 
Schorr placed fourth in the long jump at 6.11 meters, as well.
 
UWS now prepares for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championships Friday and Saturday at Cougar Track in Morris Minn.
