Men’s Track Wins Fifth UMAC Outdoor Title

MORRIS Minn. -- The UW-Superior men's track and field team won its fifth Upper Midwest Athletic Conference outdoor championship on Saturday at Cougar Track by 66 points.
 
The Yellowjackets scored 248.5 points for the meet, getting six events victories on the final day to take their first outdoor conference title since 2019. 
 
Gage Stankiewicz (Esko, Minn./Esko) won both the shot put and discus on Saturday, with Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona) winning the 400 meters for a third individual event win on the second day. Tyler Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) also took the 1,500 meters in 4:21.12. Stankiewicz threw 15.59 meters in the shot and 42.42 meters in the discus. Westimayer ran 51.71 to win the 400.
 
The Yellowjackets also won the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays to build their lead. The team of Steven Pearson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Westimayer, Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) ran the 4x400 in 3:30.26, while Schorr, Matheson, Pearson and Westimayer won the 4x100 in 43.72.
 
Schorr was also second in the 100 meters in 11:03 while Westimayer was sixth in 11:25. Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum) finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16:29 and Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) was eighth in 18.43.
 
Matheson finished third in the 400,followed by Pearson (fifth, 52.77) and Schorr (sixth, 52.90). Michael Butterfield (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) placed second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:53.13 and Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) was eighth in 17:40.72.
 
Pearson finished third in the triple jump in 12.66 meters and Westimayer was eighth in 11.48 meters.
 
Brock Phernetton (Frederic, Wis./Frederic) was fourth in the shot put and Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) fifth in 13.66 meters and 13.50 meters, respectively. Tanner Lee (Siren, Wis./Siren) was also second behind Stankiewicz in the discus at 40.53 meters.
 
Martin Luther finished second in the team standings with 182.5 points and Minnesota Morris (96 points) was third. Bethany Lutheran (89.5), Northwestern (69.5), North Central (60) and Crown (31) rounded out the field.
 
UWS returns to action Friday in the Eagle Open at UW-La Crosse at 3 p.m.
