This Week in Yellowjacket Athletics (3/2/2017)

Last Week's Highlights
- The University of Wisconsin Superior claimed the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championship in two sports: men's track & field and women's basketball. The Yellowjackets defeated the University of Minnesota Morris 72-46 to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament beginning this weekend.
- Senior Alex Fathie (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall H.S.) and sophomore C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman H.S.) were named the UMAC Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Meet, respectively. UW-Superior's Glen Drexler earned the title of UMAC Coach of the Year, and 12 Yellowjackets earned all-conference honors on Tuesday.
- Junior Svenja Ruehl (Kirchuers, Germany/Gymnasium Philippinum Marburg) was named the UMAC Field Athlete of the Meet for the second-straight season at UWS, while five Yellowjackets earned all-conference honors on the women's side.
- Junior guard Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) earned her second consecutive UMAC Player of the Year honor on Wednesday, while first-year forward Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) claimed the title of UMAC Freshman of the Year. UW-Superior placed five on the UMAC All-Conference teams.
- Junior guard Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) and freshman Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) each received All-UMAC Honorable Mention selections.

Baseball (0-0)
- The turn of the calendar to March means baseball is right around the corner. The Yellowjackets will open their season in just 17 days as UWS takes on Allegheny (Pa.) College to open the Tucson Invitational on Sunday, March 19.

Women's Basketball (23-4)
- The old cliche says it's hard to beat a team three times in one season, but UW-Superior bucked the trend with its most dominant victory of the season over UM-Morris in the UMAC Championship game last Saturday at Mortorelli Gym. For their trouble, the Yellowjackets earned a shot against the No. 2-ranked team in the nation as they face the undefeated University of St. Thomas (27-0) opening the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening. With 14-straight victories in tow, UW-Superior will look for an upset and claim its program-record 24th victory this season. The 6-foot-3-inch senior Kaitlin Langer leads the Tommies with a dominating 19.7 point per game average, shooting 55.2 percent and grabbing 8.2 rebounds per outing. It will be the second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Yellowjackets, while St. Thomas makes its 24th trip to the national postseason since 1984.

Men's Hockey (8-19-2)
- UW-Superior ended its season in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup Tournament  last weekend. The Yellowjackets were swept in their semifinal series against the No. 3-ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. Thursday, the WIAC announces the 2016-17 All-Conference teams for men's hockey.

Women's Hockey (12-15-0)
- UW-Superior ended its season in the WIAC O'Brien Cup Tournament last weekend. The Yellowjackets were swept in their semifinal series against the No. 3-ranked University of Wisconsin River Falls. Friday, the WIAC announces the 2016-17 All-Conference teams for women's hockey.

Softball (2-2)
- UW-Superior book-ended its weekend at the Finlandia University Dome Classic with victories, defeating UW-Stevens Point 6-3 on Friday night and Concordia University Wisconsin 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. First-year infielder Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) led the way, batting 9-for-13 on the weekend with three doubles, three RBIs, and four runs scored. First-year pitcher Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) gave up just four earned runs in 14.0 innings, striking out 13 batters in the process. The Yellowjackets will be back in action on Friday, March 17 at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. UWS will face Marian University in a rematch to start the spring road trip.

Men's and Women's Track & Field
- The top performers for UW-Superior will be in action this weekend at a pair of Last Chance Qualifying meets for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships. The women will be represented by Ruehl in the triple jump, sophomore Taylor Phillips (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) in the shot put, and sophomore Kelli Praska (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) in the 800-meter run. The throwers will be on hand for the Yellowjacket women as senior Tommy Fleming (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake H.S.) and Pillath compete in the weight throw and senior Thomas Udenberg (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet H.S.) competes in the shot put.
