Americo "Mertz" Mortorelli graduated from UW-Superior in 1949 and returned in 1954 to serve as the university's first athletic director. Until his death in 1985, he also taught physical education and coached Yellowjacket sports, including football, wrestling, track, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and gymnastics. He was responsible for expanding the university's athletic offerings from three sports to 14, and instrumental in the construction of many of the university's current athletic facilities. Of all his accomplishments, those who knew him said he was proudest of once having been named the university's Teacher of the Year.

Along with his skill as a coach, Mortorelli was known for the unofficial role he played as mentor, friend and guide to hundreds of young men who participated in Yellowjacket athletics.

UW-Superior's Mortorelli Gymnasium and Mortorelli Drive, adjoining the university's campus, are named in honor of Mertz Mortorelli.
