Sally Linzmeier came to UW-SuperiorĀ and immediately made an impact, helping launch the women's basketballĀ from eight wins to 12 in her first year, then to 19 in her second, taking the Yellowjackets to heights they'd never seen in women's basketball.
Ā
From day one, Linzmeier opened eyes and turned heads, but not one to rest on her laurels, Linzmeier constantly carved out time in the gym to work on her game.
Ā
As a junior, Linzmeier helped the Yellowjackets advance the WIAC title game for the first time in program history. The following season, Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets to the first and only WIAC regular-season championship in program history. A trip to the NCAA tournament was not in the cards, however, as the Yellowjackets fell to UW-Oshkosh in the conference title game for the second year in a row.
Ā
In her four years, Linzmeier ran roughshod over the UW-Superior record book. During her senior season, Linzmeier broke the school's all-time scoring mark and finished her career with 1,686 points. She is also the school's all-time leader in steals (318), field goals made (603) and free throws made (447). She is third all-time in rebounds (754), third all-time in assists (335) and seventh all-time in games played (101).
Ā
With numbers like that, it's no surprise Linzmeier piled up enough accolades to fill a trophy case.
Ā
At the end of her senior season, Linzmeier was named All-American First Team by the Women's Basketball Coaches AssociationĀ and Women's DIII News. She was named All-American Second Team by d3hoops.com, as well as by Bennett Rank. The Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia announced her as a finalist for the Jostens Trophy, one of 10 players in the running nationally for the award. Her jersey was also chosen for display in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
Ā
The season prior, Linzmeier was named All-American by d3hoops.com and Bennett Rank.
Ā
Linzmeier was a two-time WIAC Player of the Year, earning the honor in 2014 and 2015. She was a three-time All-WIAC selection and a four-time member of the WIAC All-Defensive Team.
Ā
Off the court, Linzmeier, who held a 3.76 grade-point average as a math major, became the first UW-Superior student-athlete to be named Capital One Academic All-America® by the College Sports Information Directors of America, earning second team honors in 2015.
Ā
And all that is just basketball. Linzmeier posted a career batting average of .304 over 85 games with the Yellowjacket softball team. And for good measure, in 2015, she suited up for theĀ women's soccer team, appearing in all 15 matches,Ā scoring two goals and five points on the way to receiving All-UMAC honorable mention.
