University of Wisconsin-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame
Susan Gradin Hartzell of Lake Nebagamon, Wis., was a talented Yellowjacket student-athlete who has distinguished herself as an imaginative and dedicated physical education teacher. She is inducted into the Hall of Fame as recipient of the Lydia C. Thering Meritorious Service Award, which is named for one of UW-Superior's pioneers in women's athletics and physical education. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and who has made a substantial and innovative contribution to furthering the fitness, health and wellness concept in society.
Hartzell earned letters in volleyball and basketball during the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons. After graduating with honors in 1974, she continued her education over the years, completing licensure requirements for adaptive physical education and for working with emotional-behavior disturbed students.
Over the years, Hartzell has taught a variety of subjects but has focused on physical education. She has gone far beyond the normal requirements of her job, using caring and creative approaches to teach and motivate students of varying abilities. She has designed curriculum for traditional and non-traditional activities; designed and implemented innovative fitness and activity programs; raised money to purchase new equipment and to provide clothing and field trip fees for underprivileged students; and constructed and sewn many pieces of physical education equipment and recycled discarded equipment. She is active in athletic and professional organizations, and also has coached sports teams and worked as a volleyball referee.
